GIG REVIEW

Riverside @ Islington Academy - 15/11/09

Riverside

Click on band links below for info:

RIVERSIDE

PINEAPPLE THIEF

Porcupine Tree seem to be a reoccurring influence amongst tonights acts, none more so than with the support band Pineapple Thief (8/10). These boys from Somerset are clearly influenced by Steven Wilson, in both musicality and sound; yet vocally are closer to Placebo and Muse. This mixture highlights the new wave within modern progressive rock of taking almost electro sounds along with classic prog rock triats such as time signatures, amazing guitar effects and a strong musical grounding. All in all I was impressed with Pineapple Thief, their songs were strong and had enough musical wit to keep the crowd involved.

Riverside (10) have built up a solid underground reputation with their clearly influenced Pink Floyd style, with a 21st century twist and tonight clearly highlights it. Even though this is only their third UK show they have packed the academy out with loyal and devoted fans. The set mainly contains tracks from the first three albums but they do air the stronger tracks off of the new album 'Anno Domini High Definition'. Floyd and Porcupine Tree ooze out of every pore Riverside posses, Mariusz sings like an angel tonight whilst Pitor's guitar almost makes me weep with his beautiful bends and that 'less is more approach' that Riverside do so well, a skill that didn't do Pink Floyd any harm what so ever.

In some respect Riverside (like The Pineapple Thief before them) are the perfect English prog rock band. They have a relaxed; almost shy manner on stage and just get on with the job, only occasionally talking to the crowd, yet they have one characteristic that links them so strongly to bands like Floyd, Genesis and Yes: a hint of meloncholy; with Riverside though this is even stronger when you know they come from Poland, a country that has very little prospects in terms of jobs and still has the shadow of communist Russia hanging over its young shoulders. So when Mariusz sings 'From day to day... from hand to mouth' from 'Second Life Syndrome' you not only feel that very English sense of meloncholy (summed up so well by Roger Walters in 'Time' with the line: "Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way") but you also feel the pain of someone growing up in Poland.

They were amazing tonight and I was left in very little doubt that they are the heirs to Pink Floyds crown! I know this is a bold statement yes but when I saw them about a year or two ago at the camden underworld I got a feeling I was watching something special, something truely important. Here in this medium sized venue they cemented that feeling and pinned their claim to the mast, improving upon their last London show at the underworld and getting that little bit better. The crowd were up for it to and went bonkers during the entire night.

So let me introduce to you Pink Floyds very worthy succesors... Riverside!

BRUTAI

F.S.I

AMONGST THE ASHES

HEADRUSH

Each month The Metal Cross night brings you a selection of local metal bands to the New Cross Inn.

Any band who's singer sounds a little like Barney Greenway from Napalm Death is always going to be interesting, and HEADRUSH (6.5/10) are certainly that. Tonight their middle-ground metal sound with extreme vocals works well. AMONGST THE ASHES (6) have a lot of ideas which shine through when they play. Their sound moves from heavy European style metal to a cover of Faith No More's 'The gentle art of making enemies' and then into a more groove-orientated direction as the set progresses. This lack of cohesion could of let them down but their fanbase enjoyed every last minute. F.S.I (7) look and sound like they have been touring their backsides off for years. Their self-styled shanty metal sounds like a drunken brawl between Mastodon and The Gates of Slumber, and their onstage presence is such that they not only take over the stage but the whole venue, leaving their huge muscular musical mark in the process.

Remember the times when you have seen a band and thought you could easily listen to them all night long, before being rudely awakened by the fact that the set had finished? Tonight Catford four-piece BRUTAI (8) are storming. The most impressive thing about their material is the way they effortlessly combine many influences into their own music without sounding like those influences. There is a little Trivium here and there, but dirtier and grittier with vocalist Felix Lawrie's floorless transition between gruff and melodic vocals enabling the songs to move without hindrance. There are bites of Maiden, but these are submerged into a network of wonderful riffs and roving solos from lead guitarist Henry Ryan, driving each song into musical ectasy. Meanwhile the rhythem section gives the band an extra layer, a an almost Gojira-style heaviness which keeps the band afloat on a sea of well structured songs. With the crowd transfixed Brutai manage to churn out one of the best performances by an unsigned band since Snakebite and Sanctorum at Bloodstock.

Catch Brutai in a small dark venue near you soon as it is only a matter of time before they are dragged into the light.
