RELEASING A SINGLE
Step Three – The Press Release
Once you’ve got gigs and a release date, you can write a press release. Keep it as simple as possible – it only needs to be one page of A4, and should ideally include the artwork image and a photo of the band if possible. The key thing about the press release is that it needs to hook people – it will be the first thing the press and radio producers look at, so it needs to be eye catching and ideally stand out and look different somehow. Be creative with it – if you’re an innovative songwriter, use those skills to create an innovative press release. The people you send it to will see hundreds of press releases a day, so this is really key and potentially the make or break moment. Remember, you’re trying to entice someone into listening to your single – it needn’t be wordy, so probably best to keep it brief. In fact, all you need is:
A couple of sentences that introduce the band (avoid hyperbole like “the best band in Kent” and avoid injokes that only your band will find funny – but try and make you sound interesting and different) A couple of sentences about the song – perhaps compare it to a band that they will know as a reference point for the reader A list of the gigs you are playing. The release date should be very clear and include where it will be available to buy from Contact details for further information. Remember, the key is making it your own – the best press releases are unique to that band and entice someone in.
Fourth part to follow next week.

GIG REVIEW
Gig review: Band Quest Metal Heat 6 @ The Drayman - 23/03/09
1st) Violation Complex
2nd) Conquest
3rd) Venxia
Another week and another heat in the Bexleyheath metal category of Band Quest, with 3 bands battling for a place at Bloodstock!
With tonights favourites Violation Complex (8/10) on first the venue was nicely packed for their death metal onslaught. The four-piece are aptly named as the music draws you into a complex web of musical ideas, industrialised riffs and dark forboding promise. With tracks like 'The three faces of pigboy' with its odd progressive moments and the stomping 'The complex' they have the weaponry to threaten the other big hitters in this competition. Tonight they start off slightly below par by their standards, but like Snakebite last week they seem to move up a few gears halfway through the set. The last 15 minutes alone is enough to take them through to the semi-finals.
It was always going to be hard for Venxia (6.5) in front of a crowd primarily at the Drayman for a slice of death or classic metal. Their Bullet For My Gallows style attack is entertaining enough with singer Aidan bursting with enough energy to run a small factory for the night. The music is solid and while some of the riffs struggle to shine from beneath the punky vocal style there is enough here to suggest they have an interesting future.
It was a surprise to some that final band Conquest (7.5) put on their venue best performance tonight. Especially since they have had their fare share of trouble the last six months, losing their rhythem section and more recently machine gun guitarist Roy Stone. Fortunately Mr Stone was back within 24 hours for this gig and with ex-Schizophrenia man Glenn Bater behind the drums they were already putting the bad times behind them. Their NWOBHM meets 80s hard rock sound hit the right places from the off with excellent set opener 'Conquest'. The big meaty riffs, courtesy of Les Clayden, seemingly crushing those who ventured too close while frontman Kev Eardley's vocals hit a Lemmy-like peak during the chorus. 'Too cruel' and set staple 'Crescent moon setting sun' also crackled with a new found anger, with the guitar sound of Roy Stone sounding its best since last years impressive camden gig. They may have finished second but tonight Conquest played what could turn out to be the beginning of an upward journey, or alternatively a triumphant swansong.
