RELEASING A SINGLE

Step Six – And finally

Whilst your good press release work is busy working for you behind the scenes, you need to start letting other people know about the release – and the best way to do this is on the Internet. Use the social networking sites to spread the word. It’s a really good idea to film something for You Tube (anything!!!) to promote the single and combine it with a small ad that you can post on people’s pages. Again, do your best to make it stand out and make it unique.

Don’t pester press and radio producers whilst you’re waiting for the date to come around – this will probably only annoy them. There’s no harm in sending a reminder e-mail the week before, but don’t do it every day.

It’s also a really good idea to make it really easy for people to buy your single. Instead of telling people it’s on HMV’s website, put a link that people can click on that will take them to the exact page. The easier it is, the more chance you’ll get a sale.

GIG REVIEW

Gig review: Band Quest Metal Semi Final 1 @ The Drayman - 20/04/09

1st) Carpathia
2nd) Colt 44
3rd) Shattered Alliance

Another week and another semi final in the Bexleyheath metal category of Band Quest, with 3 bands battling for a place at Bloodstock!

Having disposed of local favourites Silas in their first heat Shattered Alliance (7/10) may have been fancying their chances in the first Band Quest semi final of 2009. The sledgehammer riffs, metalcore song structures and enormous sound were all present and once again they sounded like the biggest band of the night. Some of the soloing was impressive and the penultimate song had the entire venue by the neck. On the downside the tracks seemed to become slightly predictable and the melodic vocals failed to carry the songs into the clean sounding choruses that were there waiting for them.

The dusty suited Carpathia (7.5) may come from Coventry but their support here was admirable. With the crowd on their side right from the moment the intro tape kicked in they had seemingly won one battle already. In truth it was a poor start to the set as the clean vocals failed to hit home, making the song struggle for stability. Fortunately the second half of the song concentrated on some trademark deathly growls, time changes aplenty and blackened outpourings of metallic might. In fact it turned out to be a mini epic in the end, which could also be said for the remainder of the set. Various influences surge through the veins of Carpathia, ranging from black, death, thrash and prog metal, all of which collide in a sort of a painstakingly constructed car crash. Most interesting were the song structures which helped showcase the technical skill of all the band members. They will be welcomed back with open arms when the final finally arrives.

Final band Colt 44 (7) were always destined to struggle up against such heavy opposition. Their brand of alt-metal always sounded better during its heavier moments, but most of the songs were punchy and self confident. Ultimately though Colt 44 were the alternative on a night ruled by the heavier side of metal.
