GIG REVIEW
Def Leppard @ Islington Academy - 06/05/08
I was and still feel gutted that I am not seeing def leppard play at Wembley this year. My own fault as I spent to long thinking about spending the money on the tickets even though you are getting three quality bands for the price of one. Only god knows, on that Tuesday, my delight and surprise that I received a phone call from Gig Wise saying I won a competition to go to their album launch. Not only that I get to meet them as well.
After getting the band (minus rick savage due to not feeling great) and their tour manager to sign the album it was off to the pub to reflect on what has just happened and waiting for a friend to meet me as he was my "plus 1". Got in the venue and waiting for the band to show in anticipation. I knew that they would be playing mostly of the back catalogue but I was hoping their play most of new album.
Once the pa music stopped, they ripped open with "let it go". Classic Lep and a great concert song opener. Still in shock as being a 5ft 4 seeing bands at venues when not seated can be a problem but I was close to the stage and had great view. One of the band's own fav songs to play live was next. "Action", great harmony and wicked guitar licks makes this song keep the tempo up and the crowd going. One song they should have put on the "yeah" album.
Joe Elliot, to me is one of the most underrated rock vocalists going. However, given the recent events involving his health which resulted in cancellation of the Canada leg of their tour, it was clear that he is still struggling. Fortunately, this band knows how to put on a good show even when they are not 100%.
First new song of the night "Bad Actress" was played next and I'm so pleased I saw this play live as this is, to me, the best song on the new album. Fast paced, both guitar players take it turns to perform a sweat dripping guitar solos and Joe delivering the vocals like his life depended on it.
Next two songs were the old ones "Armageddon it" and "Rocket". Even though these songs are over 20 years old, they still sound modern. Two new ones came thick and fast after with Nine Lives and hallucinate. Both songs, they performed well and the crowd really seem to enjoy them too.
To end the first part of the gig they played their biggest hits. No matter how many times they play songs like "pour some sugar", "animal" and "let's get rocked" they are always played to perfection and the crowd certainly lapped them up.
Most bands normally play one encore but Def Leppard managed to squeeze in two. The first included another new song and according to Joe the next single. "Come on, Come on" followed by "Rock of Ages". What you can tell with "Come On" and like with the other new songs the band has faith in performing the new material at gigs. They really enjoyed playing them live and the good thing is that the crowd really showed their approval on the new material. The songs on encore two were "Mirror Mirror" and "Wasted". These two were another crowd pleaser as these don't get played much.
All in all to me a fantastic gig and one that is a great launch pad for the new album For the lucky people who are seeing them on tour in June, not only will u see a proper rock band at their best. With the new material, they are showing their still have plenty of miles on the clock.
8/10
