BAND QUEST NEWS
Band Quest 2012 is go!

So it all begins, again...
Band Quest is back in 2012 and once again combines the glorius opposites of alternative music. The heavier category incorporates the Bloodstock Metal 2 The Masses as always and starts on Wednesday 25th January, while the lighter, more alternative/indie category will start in March.
One of last years winners INNER FIRE will be guest headliners for the opening qualifyer in Maidstone which also features last years Kent finalists KHTHON, whose brand of Kentish doooom went down a storm and led to them finishing 3rd overall, missing out on Bloodstock by one place.
With hardly a pause for breath Essex awakes a day later in Colchester with metal merchants MERCILESS FAIL taking on THREE THRONES and DISMANIBUS.
London kicks off on the Friday with the likes of WHETSTONE and DIRE INSANITY taking up the challenge in Lewisham.
It's back in Kent on Monday. This time in Dartford where thrashers ROADKILL begin their campaign, while previous winners ZOCALO take up the guest headlining slot in Canterbury a week later in what promises to be an enthralling night with SHATTERPOINT, WRETCHED SOUL and BAPHVOMIT up against each other.
Previous campaigns
To say the previous Band Quest/Metal 2 The Masses campaigns have been successful would be something of an understatement.
Among the bands to have reached Bloodstock Open Air through Unified Sounds are THE FURIOUS HORDE (who subsequently won a spot at MetalCamp 2012), TRAINING ICARUS, SHREDDERTRON, INNER FIRE, SILENT DESCENT (who have played the Download Festival twice since), AVENGE THEE AND NAIME, SPLINTERED SOUL, ECHOES FALL, ZOCALO, SILAS, SNAKEBITE (who went on to play Wacken), O.M.T, SANCTORUM (who are currently on tour with My Ruin and Godsized), THE INBREDS, DENOUNCE, CURSED AS ANGELS and more!

LOCAL BAND NEWS
Merciless Fail release debut
Last years Essex Bloodstock Metal 2 The Masses finalists Merciless Fail have released their debut album 'Forged In Black'.

The album is available on iTunes and ebay. To contact please email: mercilessfail1@hotmail.co.uk
The band have been lauded over the past 2 years for their electrifying take on traditional heavy metal. Changing singers at the semi-final stage of last years M2TM campaign didn't slow them down one bit, impressing in the final before losing out to The Furious Horde.
Live reviews have been positive:
"First up were MERCILESS FAIL (7.5) who have been something of a breath of fresh air in the competition. Their sound harks back to the early eighties when the likes of Venom were spreading their dark gospel across the heavy metal landscape, but with the contemporary crunch of Testament. Armed with a set of catchy and well constructed songs Merciless Fail impress today, 'Forged in black' being a particular highlight, complete with its gigantic and doom laden Sabbath-esque main riff." - Rock Matrix
"'Forged in black' sounds like a forgotten classic, complete with its Maiden-esque guitars and crowd-friendly chorus. The band may quote Testament and Iron Maiden as influences but there is something more sinister in their sound, recalling the likes of Venom and Pentagram. The old school metal vibe seeps from every pore as they thrash out the best set of the night..." - Komodo Rock
The band are also ready for this years Band Quest/Metal 2 The Masses and their first qualifying gig is this Thursday at the Judge And Jury, Colchester, Essex.
For full details please see the Facebook event.

Wretched Soul keep busy
Kent metallers Wretched Soul have been busy boys of late.
December saw them support black metallers Eastern Front and The Furious Horde at the Underworld in Camden on December 18th. A video was shot which you can see here:
Wretched Soul @ Underworld, Camden
They also found time to head into the studio with producer Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Exodus) for tracking remaining drum, bass and guitar tracks for their forthcoming album at the Ecology Rooms, Kent.
Once again a video was shot which can be seen here:
Album Tracking with producer Chris Tsangarides.

An appearance at the Artic Festival in Canning Town in January has warmed them up nicely for their opening Band Quest / Metal 2 The Masses qualifier in Canterbury at the Beer Cart Arms. The band were one of the stand out acts at the Kent final in 2011 and are now hoping to go one step further and play the Bloodstock Festival.
For full details please see the Facebook event.

ALBUM NEWS
Rock Matrix Top 50 Albums of 2011
After the year that was 2011 finished 44 Rock Matrix workers/contributors submitted their favourite albums of the year. This is how the final top 50 list looks:
1) Mastodon - The Hunter (218 points)

"Above all, The Hunter cements Mastodon's reputation in the Champions League of heavy metal and, as the business end of the music season draws to a close, it's performances like this that are sure to garner them trophies. Absolutely Magnificent." - Cackblabbath
2) Machine Head - Unto The Locust (212 points)

"And make no mistake, that's what 'Unto The Locust' is: the most accomplished album that Robb Flynn, Phil Demmel, Adam Duce and Dave McClain have ever recorded, alongside their two career-framing records, 'Burn My Eyes' and 'The Blackening'. Cherish 'Unto The Locust': you'll be living with it for a long time. There appears to be no end to Machine Head's inspiration at this point: God only knows what they'll come up with next." - Metalhammer.co.uk
3) Evile - Five Serpents Teeth (203 points)

"Not only is this Evile's best record, it is one of the finest releases of 2011, and certainly one of the best albums within the new wave of thrash." - Sputnikmusic
4) Anthrax - Worship Music (170 points)

"Simply put, "Worship Music" is the Anthrax album fans have been praying for. It mixes the thrash aggression that was the hallmark of the band's early years with the sense of melody the band groomed in the '90s and 21st century — often in the space of a single song. This one is going to be on best of 2011 lists for metal fans and critics worldwide — and deservedly so." - Metalunderground
5) Megadeth - Th1rt3en (168 points)

"...Th1rt3en veers from the razor-sharp hooks of Public Enemy Number 1 and Black Swan to the pomp of New World Order and the brooding menace of the closing title track; an all-killer, no-filler feast of state-of-the-art metal that exudes haughty disdain for the competition." - Guardian
6) Inner Fire - New Chapter (164 points)

"...the songs here hit the target on the first listen and then continue to grab you after the second and third. By this time you would surely be mesmerised by the lavish guitar wizardry from Nik Sampson and Alex Lewis which carefully envelopes this album like a mother with a new born. At their heaviest Inner Fire utilise the gang vocal led choruses really well, adding an early Anthrax feel to 'Rain before it slows considerably into a sludgy climax. 'The path' continues to shred while live favourite 'Ashes to ashes' leaves you pondering if this is the best track they have ever produced. 2011 has been a big year for Inner Fire and this release just about tops it all off." - Rock Matrix
7) The Furious Horde - Assemblage (121 points)

"This piece of work combines the Symphonic Black Metal sounds of Dimmu Borgir and Twilight Ophera with the Gothic Metal envisage of Ghost, Cradle of Filth, Deathstars and Motionless In White mixed together, none the less 'Assemblage' brings a whole new sound to the Essex Metal scene, one of darkness and extreme emotion, but also meaningful brutality and sensational sounds." - Globalmetalapocalypse
8) Arch Enemy - Khaos Legions (107 points)

"The four-year break since RISE OF THE TYRANT really helped the band bring back some of that creativity, and the addition of Chris Amott back into in the writing team, and the change in producer, all combined to make a very, very strong album. In fact this might be my favorite Arch Enemy yet." - Metal-Rules
9) Opeth - Heritage (106 points)

"If you like it the first time, you'll love it the more you hear it. If you don't like it, give it some time and you may come to understand it. I'd like to think that Opeth still has some Death Metal in their future, but the more I listen to 'Heritage' the less sure I am. I think they've really hit on something here that they should be proud of." - Metaltalk
10) Steel Panther - Balls Out (102 points)

"Crude, rude, filthy, and more infectious than a bad case of herpes–that sums up Balls Out, the new record from Hollywood's Steel Panther. Before you know it, you'll be singing along to lyrics that are so vulgar and obscene they could make John Waters blush. Marilyn Manson, step aside. The new shock-rock–or is it shocker-rock?–kings are in town." - Revolvermag
11) Hell - Human Remains (96 points)
12) Black stone Cherry – Between The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea (94 points)
13) Skindred - Union Black (87 points)
14) Foo Fighters - Wasting Light (86 points)
15) Black Country Communion - 2 (84 points)
16) Devin Townsend Project - Deconstruction (79 points)
17) Snakebite - Created From Nothing (78 points)

"Created From Nothing' is a gleaming example of how a band can combine, polish and welcome their influences into their backyard in a natural and mature way, without making their music sound like a pick'n'mix of every band under the sun, which seems to be the main objective of many an act in 2011. Snakebite have taken a perfectly measured stride with this release; a stride that keeps them in touch with their past but more importantly points proficiently into their future." - Rock Matrix
18) Within Temptation - The Unforgiving (70 points)
19) Korn - Path of Totality (67 points)
20) Trivium - In Waves (67 points)
21) Devin Townsend Project - Ghost (61 points)
22) Nightwish - Imaginaerum (60 points)
23) Sylosis - Edge of The Earth (57 points)
24) Saxon - Call To Arms (55 points)
25) DevilDriver - Crowns of Creation (54 points)
26) Rival Sons – Pressure and Time (53 points)
27) Avenge Thee + Naime - Open Carpet (52 points)

"Despite sounding like it is dragging itself through a swamp the album retains a constant and confident tempo, helped along by the fact there is no gap between songs; each sludgy beast linked to the next by the doomiest riffing to come out of Kent since Khthon were last seen near a studio. Avenge Thee + Naime have managed to dredge up a short, sharp, shock which not only has that immediate impact but lingers in the system like a particularly nasty virus." - Rock Matrix
28) Evanescence - Evanescence (52 points)
29) Amon Amarth - Surtur Rising (51 points)
30) Whitesnake - Forevermore (49 points)
31) Five Finger Death Punch - American Capitalist (47 points)
32) Subversion - Lest We Forget (43 points)

"North Kent sextet Subversion have gone for the jugular on their debut 'Lest We Forget' and created a conceptual tech metal beast of an album. Subversion have managed to take a topical concept and infuse it into a set of terrifyingly heavy tracks, creating a gold plated soundtrack to one mans oblivion." - Rock Matrix
33) Cavalera Conspiracy - Blunt Force Trauma (41 points)
34) Sanctorum - Semper Fidelis (40 points)

"Overall I am extremely impressed with 'Semper Fidelis', an immense sound for a 4-piece metal act full from start to finish of killer riffs, beguiling melodies, ear shattering drums, all fronted by the sheer attack of the vocals making this record highly recommended to all metal fans and I look forward to hearing more from these guys." - circlepit.tv
35) PJ Harvey – Let England Shake (39 points)
36) Iced Earth - Dystopia (39 points)
37) In Flames - Sounds Of A Playground Fading (38 points)
38) Seether - Holding onto Strings Better Left to Fray (37 points)
39) Alestorm – Back Through Time (35 points)
40) Rise Against – Endgame (34 points)
41) Joe Bonamassa – Dustbowl (33 points)
42) Rise to Remain – City of Vultures (33 points)
43) Children Of Bodom - Relentless, Reckless Forever (32 points)
44) The Horrors- Still Life (32 points)
45) Autopsy - Macabre Eternal (32 points)
46) Alice Cooper - Welcome 2 My Nightmare (31 points)
47) Onslaught - Sound of Violence (31 points)
48) Reckless Love - Animal Attraction (30 points)
49) The Treatment – This Might Hurt (29 points)
50) Journey – Eclipse (29 points)
Have to give a shout out to Amebix, Xerath, The Devil's Blood, Wolves In The Throne Room and The Defiled who all just missed out on the top 50.
Cheers to everyone who voted and here's to a good album year in 2012.

Subversi0n split
Gravesend tech-metallers Subversion have parted ways.
An official statement from the band was posted on their facebook profile:
"It has been a wonderful 4 years and a difficult past couple of months but alas we have come to a point where it is time to say goodbye for the foreseeable future from Subversion.
We won't leave without a present for all you loyal fans (our Subversionites) who have followed us to the end and indeed been here from the very beginning.
Here is a track we were working on for what would have been our second album. It is a work in progress, and we do plan on completing it before fully parting ways.
To all the people who have helped us along the way, the people we have met at our shows, and indeed the amazing bands we had the pleasure of sharing a stage with. This ones for you!
Over and out from the Subversionaut's."
The track is available here: soundcloud.com/kaigir/mind-map-3-i
The Kent sextet ended 2010 with an album pre-launch party at the Camden Underworld which also saw them support TesseracT, one the fastest rising bands in the UK. 2011 continued the success with the official release of debut album 'Lest We Forget' which went on to receive red hot reviews. These very pages described it as "a conceptual tech metal beast of an album" and it finished inside the top 40 Rock Matrix albums of the year.
Dates with Anterior/Xerath followed along with an appearance at the Euroblast Festival in Germany alongside the likes of Textures, Mnemic, Tesseract, Vildhjarta, Aliases, Visions, Chimp Spanner, Sybreed, Disperse, The Algorithm, Monuments, Proghma-c, Panzerballett, Disconcrete and Uneven Structure.

Death track listing:
RAM was created back in '99 and released their first E.P Sudden Impact in 2003. After playing numerous festivals and a support tour for Sebastian Bach they released their first long player Forced Entry in late 2005 which brought the entire old school Heavy Metal community to its knees. RAM hit the road with Dark Tranquillity, did some Scandinavian shows with Gamma Ray and played gigs and festivals all over Europe.
In 2008 the band returned to the studio with producer Johan Reivén to record the album Lightbringer which was released in 2009 via AFM Records. This time they really took the time to explore the true heavy metal sound. The recording of the album took 10 months of nothing but strife for pure Heavy Metal perfection. RAM also headed out on a headline European tour to promote the album.
In 2011 RAM went back into the studio to record their third album Death. This time they worked with producers Per Stålberg and Olle Bjork to create their best album to date by far. Live shows as support for Swedish extreme black metal band Watain followed as well as destroying some festivals.
The world trembles in fear before the release of the metal behemoth that is Death. RAM are back! Necks will be broken!
RAM is:
Oscar Carlquist - Vocals
Morgan Pettersson - Drums
Harry Granroth - Guitar
Daniel Johansson - Guitar
Tobias Peterson - Bass

INTERVIEW
Rock Matrix speaks to Ben Falgoust and James Harvey of Goatwhore - 23/01/12
Interview by Ashlinn Nash
Ashlinn (Rock Matrix): What has the recording experience been like for this album?
James (Goatwhore): The recording went relatively smooth. We were prepared going into the studio, which makes things easier. All in all it was a good experience. It is a very nice studio in a good location.
Ben (Goatwhore): It was really relaxed. It seems the last few times in the studio with Rutan have been a process. The record "A Haunting Curse" was our first with Rutan and we were new to working with him and his ideas. As Rutan developed as an engineer and we developed as musicians the work bond grew as well. Our ideas molded more and the trust on both ends progressed with each record. We listened to his ideas and methods, as well as he did to ours. Our last release, "Carving Out The Eyes Of God", was more of a step to capture the sound of Goatwhore as a live band. I feel the latest release is just another step in solidifying our sound as a band and Erik's skills as an engineer. We have this kind of schedule that go by in the studio at this point, sort of a solid formula that works for all of us. It is always a pleasure to work with him.

RM: Where did you draw inspiration from for 'Blood for the Master'?
Ben: Classic Heavy Metal and other forms of extreme metal. We have diverse tastes in all platforms of metal, mostly leaning towards more traditional heavy metal. The rest is just an addition of other extreme styles within the genre. We delve into black metal, thrash metal, death metal, etc. for the final touches.
RM: What lyrical themes are predominant within the album and how do they differ from previous work?
Ben: The absolution of Death and the struggle of scourge. Not that it is some amazing idea or new concept, but it has been a very interesting subject for myself over the last 8 or so years. Of course, I still delve into the pure abhor for organized religion and the fall of mankind. Very basic ideas, but progressive in the reasoning behind them. Some things can have a spin on them. The ways they are approached and perceived. Each person has his/her own outlook on a belief or idea and at times it comes close. That uniqueness is the willing idea to venture into the unknown and questionable. The difference in it all is the birth of more knowledge and research on older ideas and newer approaches.
RM: Would you say that Its better to stick to one definitive line-up or have the line-up changes brought on new flavours to the bands dynamics with song writing?
James: Line up changes are usually the result of an issue with a member, who no longer can/will function and play as a member of the band for any number of reasons. Luckily in our case, past and recent lineup changes have strengthened the band and brought a new dynamic.

Ben: It can go either way. In our case the line up changes we went through help build more of a foundation for the band. It is all about attitude when working together. If there is one bad link it can make a difference in the outcome of the music. It will never be completely perfect because everyone has their own ideas and thoughts about things, but you can come really close when everyone is on the same path as whole.
RM: The producer Erik Rutan seems to be a re-occurring name. what's it like working with him and has he contributed to the current sound?
James: Erik Rutan is a professional and it is great working with him. I think we have learned from him and visa versa. We strive for a very heavy, thick sound with a lot of guitar, natural drums, thick and deep bass, and penetrating vocals.
RM: What can the fans expect to hear from the new album?
James: 10 new, dark and interesting Goatwhore songs. The elements from ‘Carving out the Eyes of God' evolved naturally to the next step.
Ben: Basically the next viable step in the progression of Goatwhore. If you are a brand new listener, then the first introduction of Goatwhore and the rest are prequels.
RM: The album has a very unique sound. What equipment did you use for the album? Any home-made/custom equipment involved?

James: Sammy used his Randall guitar rigs and ESP guitars, with multiple effects, etc. James used a 71' Ampeg SVT head and vintage 8x10 cabinet and ESP phoenix bass with Tech 21 XXL distortion. Zack used a Pearl Reference 6 piece double kick drum kit. There were multiple mics used for recording all of the above as well as vocals. No home-made equipment was used so to speak. Erik Rutan has a well stocked studio and we brought in a lot of equipment of our own.
RM: You self produced your first album. What difficulties did you face?
Ben: The obvious. Being very unskilled and terrible usage of time. Also, being very young and careless. It happens. Being in a band and recording is a growing process. I don't dislike the past records I have done. They are great to look back on and see the evolution of the band. They mark points of growth and mistake. It is a learning lesson of what can be achieved and what needs to be achieved.
RM: What tips do you have to bands starting out, in terms of recording?
James: Practice. The more prepared you are before going into the studio the easier and smoother it will be. You do not want to be sloppy when it is your turn to record. Play to a metronome or click track. This goes for all instruments including vocals! Make sure you know that the person who is recording (this may be you) knows how to use and manipulate their equipment. Take time to get good guitar, bass, and drum tones.
Ben: Be very precise, but not overly picky. Keep your eye/ear on the prize.
RM: How would you describe the new album in 5 words?
Ben: Lethal, wreck-less, abrasive, heavy metal.
RM: What are your plans tour wise for the upcoming year?
James: We will be hitting the road in February, and will be out on a few runs in the US and Canada from then till mid March. Tours for Australia, Europe/UK, and the US are in the works for the spring/summer.
RM: You've toured with some great bands in the past. Who has been your favourite to tour with?
Ben: We have done so many tours. I don't really have a set favorite, but t was amazing touring with Celtic Frost and Venom. It was two different tours, but to play with two of the bands that have been of major influence for Goatwhore is quite intense. Especially, when the people involved with both of those bands ended up being equally as cool. We have done some great tours in the past with 1349, The Black Dahlia Murder, Exodus, 3 Inches Of Blood, Suffocation, and the list goes on. I can't really recall a bad tour or I just nixed it from my mind.
RM: What would be your dream tour line up?
James: Goatwhore, Slayer, Judas Priest!
Ben: Yea. That would do it. I can't argue with that...unless, we add in Motorhead as well. That would be the amazing!

ALBUM REVIEW
Inner Fire - New Chapter
To say the proceeding years of gigging consistently around the South East, including support slots with the likes of Blaze Bayley and Beholder has sharpened the blades and oiled the joints or Inner Fire would be something of an understatement. In 2011 they have become one of the regions most formidable live acts, gracing the stages at Bloodstock and the Underworld in Camden, all of which has helped pave the way for an impressively tidy debut album in the form of 'New Chapter'.
Unmistakable in its metalness 'New Chapter' is a wonderfully confident record combining influences in a natural and cohesive way, born from years of playing live, countless rehearsals and a desire that puts many of their contemporaries to shame. Some bands take an age finding their own sound but Inner Fire found it early and have worked hard at dusting it down and making it as good as it good possibly be. This is one reason why the songs here hit the target on the first listen and then continue to grab you after the second and third. By this time you would surely be mesmerised by the lavish guitar wizardry from Nik Sampson and Alex Lewis which carefully envelopes this album like a mother with a new born.
Opener 'Act of faith' marches forward, acting as a flag bearer for the whole album, its highly melodic chorus sitting effortlessly alongside some of that aforementioned guitar magic and a news outtake from the Metallica bus crash that claimed the life of Cliff Burton.
The age of some of these songs make them sound like old favourites with 'Inner Fire' itself galloping along on a Maiden-esque bass line and guitar solo while the creeping 'Unrepentant' mutates from a softly spoken Dickinson-style intro into an explosion of razor-edged guitars, hardcore backing vocals and semi-death metal aggression.
Although traditional and thrash metal carpets the interior of this release there is still traces of other influences trickling down the walls, one of which is the wonderfully performed southern inspired solo during 'Stagger' which may be short but somehow manages to kick the door open and show everyone there is even more exciting things to come in the future.
2011 has been a big year for Inner Fire and this release just about tops it all off.

GIG REVIEW
Saxon + Hammerfall @ Koko, Camden - 20/12/11
You could never accuse Saxon of never playing their hits. When you go to a Saxon gig you know that most of the crowd pleasers will be included and everyone in the building will have face-wide smiles come kicking out time. But where some bands tour the world playing only their well known tracks and maybe the odd newbie Saxon demand their fans to hear the new material as well. Not in an Iron Maiden way though which often leaves you wishing they had played a few more of their classics, but in a way that somehow manages to merge the best of both worlds and keep most people happy.
Having the right support act also helps early interest and drags people away from the pubs which is why the Koko is packed for special guests HAMMERFALL (7.5/10) whose fine tuned power metal attack acts as a red carpet for the English headliners. It's a rarity to see so many people bang their heads so early to the likes of.. erm 'Bang your head' and 'Bloodbound', both of which have choruses burned from the fiery pits of true metal which warm us all year round, especially during a chilly evening in December. 'Last man standing' unites the crowd, resulting in multiple punches to the sky while 'Let the hammer fall' glides over the sweaty hordes with ease having already slayed thousands during many years of European festival outings. By the time 'Hearts on fire' brings the tightly executed set to a close loud cheers meet the news that the band will be back in 2012 for a headlining tour.
There was a moment in 2008 at the Download festival when the collective metal hordes descended on the Gibson tent when the line-up presented a choice between Incubus, Ash and Saxon. True metal heads didn't have to think hard about this one resulting in roughly a fifth of the festival crowd trying to squeeze into a tent that could seriously only hold under five thousand. The forty minute set that followed could be described as magical thanks to a cross spectrum of people having the time of their lives with Saxon as the soundtrack. This marked something of a turning point in the career of a band who have been there from the very beginning. That special bond between band and fans has survived all these years and has helped in the upward curve their career has followed recently, with latest album 'Call To Arms' continuing that trend in terms of quality and sales.
Despite the fact that the news surrounding this gig was that SAXON (8.5) would be playing the whole of their classic 'Denim and Leather' album it should be remembered it was also part of a tour supporting new album 'Call To Arms' which like 2009's 'Into The Labyrinth' was of such a high quality you wonder what some of their peers have been playing at the last few years. Opening with the excellent career spanning double header of 'Hammer of the gods' and 'Heavy metal thunder' the Camden crowd is nicely warmed for what looks like 2 hours of metal delivered in style by one of the best classic live bands on the planet.
'When doomsday comes' sounds massive, it's thoughtful but powerful verses sitting nicely between all the blood and thunder while 'Chasing the bullet' combines hard rock riffs with one of those classic Saxon choruses that they've been churning out for what seems like an eternity. As usual Biff Byford's vocal display is first class, handling the early eighties classics 'Motorcycle man' and 'Never surrender' with immaculate ease, the multi-generational crowd becoming more and more animated as the music sweeps over them.
As good as the new material is it's (as expected) the older tracks that spark the most excitement and by the time the English legends unleash 'And the bands played on', the fourth of the 'Denim and Leather' tracks played in a row the crowd is well and truly under the Saxon spell. The rest of the tracks from said album are reserved for the end of the main set with 'Denim and Leather' itself shaking the floorboards, making all of those rammed into the staircases and other various nooks and crannies of the venue hold on to something to keep the balance. The 2 encores include a guitar and bass solo and '747 (Strangers in the night)' which is always virtually impossible not to sing along to before 'Strong arm of the law' and the heavy metal majesty of 'Wheels of steel' ends proceedings on a magnificent high.
Where some bands are trapped on a whirlwind of nostalgia tours and greatest hits releases Saxon have not only survived thirty-two years in the music industry but are still delivering the goods on record and in a live environment. Long may it continue!

GIG REVIEW
Def Leppard + Motley Crue @ Wembley Arena - 14/12/11
Well another Leppard tour and I must say for a band who have always tried to steer clear of the 'hairspray' rock scene, I was most surprised by the support bands of Steel Panther and Motley Crue. However, not that I was complaining. I haven't heard of Steel Panther (5/10) that much but I always thought they were a jokey version of The Darkness and that is saying something.
The queue for the merchandise was long and I was going to miss the start and I wasn't that bothered. However, when the wife and I actually got to our seats I wish I saw them for the start. The song that was playing, sounded good but for me the highlight was the banter that was going on between the guys in between songs. Songs such as 'Eatin ain't cheatin' and '17 lovers in a row' were pretty good and I recommend anyone who is into fun rock and who don't take their music seriously to check them out.
Next up was Motley Crue (6) and I have to say I don't think many were sitting down. Kicking off with 'Wild side' they looked like they were up for this and not just going through the motions. New song 'Saint of Los Angeles' proved that they still have something to say. They ploughed their way through the hits such as 'Same old situation' and 'Home sweet home'. As much as it was great seeing these songs played live, to be honest as it was reported on earlier gigs, I feel many people were waiting for the drum solo. Then it happened. The guy who is probably more famous for a certain tape decides to upstage the whole band by doing a drum solo, leaning towards the electric scene, while going round 360' in the air. I would advise anyone to youtube it to see for yourself. It really was amazing. Not as good as the 360's he used to do in the 80's but Hell, it certainly made the set worthwhile.
After Tommy invited a fan to sit with him while he done it again the rest of set felt to me like an afterthought. Still, hearing people sing and clap to a Gary Glitter song before and after they played 'Smoking in the boys room' was kinda funny.
Bang on 9:30pm the Lep's (9) took to the stage starting with their new song 'Undefeated'. This song should be one that they play live on future tours as this is a pure Lep classic. The backdrop to their set was very good visually as (Joe's quote) "it was the same production as the one they use in the states". This enhanced their performance as a whole and to made me it more special.
'Rocket' came next and my only disappointment here was the guitar solo's wasn't as long as the ones they used to do for this song. Seeing as the next song was 'Action', they could have done without this one and extended Rocket. A very much welcome surprise when 'Let it go' was played next as even though the song is nearly 30 years old, the song sounded so modern compared to most songs released around that time.
I thought that songs from their last album would be missing here but thank God they played one as 'C'mon c'mon' was really good to see live and showed that like with their latest song they are still producing songs that shows energy and rock despite their advancing years. Ballad time next with 'WLHC'. This song doesn't sound right live for me, especially not in the middle of the set. I would have saved this one for the encore.
Not to be undone with Tommy's drum solo, Rick Allen drumming through 'Switch 625' was amazing and it was the cameraman showed his footwork to highlight the talent this guy has. Next up was the usual numbers to close any Leppard gig.
Have to say the gig was enjoyable and one of the best I've seen them. My only slight complaint was that I would have dropped one of the ballads as having three ('Bringing on the heartbreak, 'Don't count') in a 17 song set is way to much.

ALBUM REVIEW
Tank Trap - TankTrap
In amongst the retro rock explosion of the past few years it can be easy to forget those bands who delve back into the more recent 90's and early 00's for hard rocking inspiration. One such band is Gravesend quartet Tank Trap who have utilised the mood and sound from the era to shape their debut 'TankTrap' and like many releases from new or developing bands the album wears its influences on its sleeves, arms and shoulders.
The main riff that hits you after eleven seconds of opener 'My animal' reeks of Audioslave/RATM but manages to incorporate a masterful groove that concretes the song to the senses. There is also a very slight southern feel knitted into the band, especially when the harmonica makes an appearance during 'Shot down' which transports you to some swamp side shack in New Orleans. As well as this the song veers closely to the vicinity of Bexleyheath rockers Faith N Fury due to the nippy chorus, fast vocal style and sound and song structure, which of course if no bad thing.
Some of the material creeps a little slower under the skin with 'Everything I own' and 'No bones (got your back)' showcasing a beautifully crafted approach to song writing, keeping the melody brewing gently under an invisible barrier, threatening to crack at any moment, leaving the listener waiting for that massive hook which always seems to be just around the next corner.
With the rhythm section of Pete 'Sick Boy' Smith on bass and Sammy Ewen on drums providing the whole project with an iron backing it leaves guitarist Ben Attwood to leave modest indentations across the whole thing, never overplaying but consciously edging the material into place. The nucleus of this universe though is the careful tones of front man Ian Day which at times seem to float on a level of their own. At times a little more aggression would help push the songs a little further but when the singer slides into Ed Kowalczyk territory the material takes on another life. Some of the vocal melodies during 'My animal' and 'Burdened smile' leave you looking over your shoulder for the shiny, bald head of the ex-Live singer.
The album contains its fare share of nicely penned tunes but it is 'Drift', with its dreamy melody and catchy-as-Hell chorus that outstrips anything else and could easily be imagined sitting on any latter day album from the Pennsylvanian quartet Live.
Overall, the main strength of Tank Trap is the ability to come up with quality song after quality song and maybe more importantly managing to put the best ones on 'TankTrap' for us all to take home and enjoy.

London's Burning @ The Intrepid Fox - 25/11/11
Legendary London pub The Intrepid Fox may have moved from its original location several years back but it still remains one of the most popular drinking holes for the alternative fraternity. One of the main positives to come out of said move is the spacious floors compared to the cramped building in Wardour Steet. This is especially true upstairs which has been used sparingly as a live venue to some success.
Tonight London's Burning, one of several live nights which are held here, welcomes 4 bands into this haven for anyone into rock and metal.
First up are South East London rockers EXIT SIGN (6/10) who are playing only their fifth gig and in some ways you can tell. Both singer Kev Eardley, who sounds the best he has done all year and guitarist Les Clayden played with the band Conquest until its implosion. What they bring with them though is a knack of churning out memorable tunes like 'Show no mercy' which manages to drag people up from downstairs and remain until the end of the set. The almost funky style of Ricky Bater's bass playing adds an all important uniqueness to the band which in 2011 is not as easy as it sounds. Although the closing track ends up sounding messy the quality of the song writing still manages to sneak through, showcasing a band slowly finding their feet in such a competitive and crowded city.
Next up are TYRIAN (5.5) who are more than several steps up with regards to the heaviness but maybe lack the live experience of other bands on the night. This doesn't seem to bother their impressive support who wriggle and writhe for the entirety of the set. The Textures-esque rhythms and brooding intensity hints at something big although it could take a few more months in the live environment before they will be knocking people off their feet.
If you live in or around London then F.S.I (8) need little introduction. With melting hot grooves underpinning every hammer like riff courtesy of Dave X the venue smashing four-piece are alive as ever tonight. The Intrepid Fox stage is already small but F.S.I make it seem like a pin prick as they take hold of every last person in the packed room and smash the likes of 'Grudgeoholic' over the heads, leaving very little to the imagination. Recent EP 'Third' is packed full of live cannon fodder with 'Night of the bloodlust' being a prime example of why the release has been gathering good reviews recently. Front man Hellborg somehow manages to surge around the stage, injuring himself in the process, giving the performance a gritty and in your face feel which ensures this bearded mob sign off for the night with their reputation stamped all over the walls.
The idea of an instrumental band headlining a gig like this may seem a little odd, especially on a Friday night when people are almost by law expected to go out, have a beer in the hand and let any troubles which have gathered during the week just disintegrate into a pile of weekend infused fun. Surely a band like SHREDDERTON (7.5) would be better suited to a Sunday when people are possibly more willing to appreciate their thought provoking song structures and coastal induced, atmospheric melody? Thirty minutes of music without vocals surely can't work tonight. Well, as they have done throughout the year, during their run to the Brighton Metal 2 The Masses final and at the Bloodstock festival itself Shreddertron literally smash it. Who needs a singer when a single, well composed riff can have the same, if not more of an impact? Bodies and heads move throughout as the songs carry us on a thirty minute ride of musical bliss, leaving all but the tone death on a high.
When the chairs and pool table shunted aside and an excellent sound tonight The Intrepid Fox is one superb little venue. With venues closing in London at an alarming rate the Fox has a real opportunity to fill some of the ever widening void and maybe, just maybe become known as a legendary live venue as well as a vital alternative drinking den.

Waters - For The One
The post-grunge, straight out grunge, grime and blues rock intertwining of 'For The One', is the course that Van Pierszalowski chooses to cast away the anchor of previous act Port O’Brien. Soulfulness mingles with grit and grime, resulting in much delving and guitar profile.
Pierszalowski's vocals are earthy, well pitched and pleading enough to pull off off this heart-wrenching number. Comforting backing vocals provide for a contrast to the hard-hitting instrumental pounce that’s pushed forward by bristling bass-lines. Waters are showing some depth to come with this promising snippet.

EP REVIEW
The Native Divide - Your Friends Aren't Mine
Gruel, grit, ruggedness and feral social bemusement merges together like solids in a sewer current, 'Waste My Time'. Gaining momentum in the drawling, stammering delivery of the simple chorus couplet:
"Your friends aren't mine, don't waste my time."
It culminates in an edgy, sordid two and a half minute splurge of shoegaze revivalism. The blues and garage rock conjoining grind of 'You Got It Wrong', uses the rhythmic rev of Ryan Harrison's guitar licks to add a bit of urgency. The vocals, at times, don't match the profile of the guitars and chiming percussive touches enough to make you focus on the lyrics. Removal of the vocal element in this case would, make the track a stirringly rugged wholly instrumental foray with enough rhythmic boldness that would, no doubt, be magnified in a live setting.
The lo-fi lob of 'Cry Wolf', sees the vocals taking back control and some versatility is shown in this element, as the vocal projection switches in impact to match the changing guitar and percussion profile. Searching power ballad 'The Chase', winds things up with a hint of tenderness and depth. It's the most lyrically meaningful track on display.
This EP drops enough hints to suggest that The Native Divide have the raw elements of grit, rhythm, range and mystique to make an impact on the ever important live music market. When they fully crack this and get a producer who can nail the right balance between the sterling instrumental rhythm build, the atmospheric slant and the vocal pitch. Then The Native Divide could make waves on the radio.
