GIG REVIEW

Cutting Edge Showcase @ Underworld - 21/01/10

After the astounding success of last years initial Cutting Edge showcase there was much anticipation for the second. The likes of Alestorm, Silent Descent and O.M.T brought the house down back in September, but now it was the turn of Ignominious Incarceration, Denounce, Snakebite, Reasonable Doubt and Into Exile.

Into Exile (6.5/10) seemed to emerge from knowhere in 2009. This didn't prevent them blasting their way to both the Band Quest and TotalRock M2TM finals, earning themselves the 'best new band' title. Tonight they opened up proceedings with a typical bout of ferociousness, the Underworld sound system making each riff hit harder than ever before. The vocals sound as if they get heavier everytime they play, which helps give weight to the impressive twin guitar attack. A rusty looseness holds the songs back a little but the head banging crowd don't seem to give a damn.

Next up were Reasonable Doubt (7) who were as usual impressively tight. The fact they are considered to be the 'most improved band' after impressing in last years Band Quest competition is of no surprise, and tonight they go one step further again. They sound massive with every note of their set maximised to its full potential, hitting the crowd for six. No wonder they are supporting Malefice in a few months.

One of the reasons Snakebite (7.5) steamrollered most of their opposition in last years Band Quest was charismatic frontman Jason Smith's ability to control any crowd put in front of him. It was no different on this night as the entire Underworld split into two for one of the biggest walls of death seen in North London in recent years. As always the Pantera influences shine through in this groove metal orientated set, with the crowd lapping up every note. Wacken won't know what's hit them!

You get the feeling with Denounce (7.5) that they could play an entire set upside down and backwards and still sound as tight and professional as they always do. 'Solace' is the best track of the night, combining lethal doses of heaviness and melody. Their thrash/death metal approach is one of unrelenting intensity which can leave the uninitiated gasping for breath.

Ignominious Incarceration (7.5) from Earache records sign the night off with a nice slab of melodic death metal. As proved on their album 'Of Winter Born' their material is slick, heavy and sometimes crushingly good. Andy Wardle's vocals sound big enough to lift the entire crowd and shake them until nothing is left. Sounding bigger and bolder than what had gone before Ignominious Incarceration bring the second Cutting Edge showcase night to an end.

This showcase may have ended but Band Quest 2010 is only about to begin.

GIG REVIEW

The Titans @ Red Lion - 22/01/10

The Titans - A Heavyweight Showdown

Click on band or DJ links below for info:

SILENT DESCENT

INFESTATION

THE CUSTARD CHUCKERS

SANCTORUM

After a month of venomous attacks from the snow, leading to this gig being rescheduled two weeks later than first planned the Titans gig finally went ahead.

Openers Sanctorum (8/10), back at this venue again after turning up and playing on the original date, showed why they caused waves at Bloodstock last year with their titanic riffage and pounding stadium sized songs. They open tonight with another set of head banging masterpieces such as 'Carved in stone' to an appreciative crowd.

Death metallers Infestation (8) get into the groove immediately and succeed in blasting every last person in the Red Lion to the outer layers of Hell with a set of scorching intensity. The vocals from Dave Samuel are stunning, giving the band extra ammunition to send down onto an unsuspecting crowd. At times they sound like Vader and Cannibal Corpse ganging up on Glenn Benton for an easy kill. As their set ends the crowd clap with what energy remains.

Following such an exlosion of musical heaviness is never easy, but The Custard Chuckers (7.5) do it with ease. Their tongue in cheek comedy acoustic act couldn't be further away from the death metal onslaught that went before them, but they manage to drag some of the crowd into the spirit of the occasion with songs about Mark Fowler (Eastenders) and sleeping with certain family members.... I doubt you find a bigger group of death metal fans with smiles on their faces for the rest of the year.

Techno metallers Silent Descent (7.5) end the night on a high with their usual mix of pounding beats and heavy guitars. In truth it leans more towards the metal side of things with the electronics taking a back seat to some grinding riffs and guttural vocals , courtesy of Tom Watling. The set is not only a fitting send off for their bassist who is leaving the band but also a great end the week.

The Titans came, they played, they conquered.

Ladies and gentlemen, we give you the infamous INTREPID FOX... From it's beginnings in the heart of Soho in the sixties, once patronised by the likes of Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood, hellraising actors Richard Harris and Peter O'Toole; the seventies led to the Sex Pistols and Malcolm Mclaren proclaiming it "like an old friend"; Slash could be seen propping up the bar in the eighties whilst the nineties provided a watering-hole for such legends as Lemmy and Zakk Wylde... Re-located to it's new lair in St Giles in 2006, the Fox continues to uphold the alternative spirit, playing host to Iron Maiden, Bullet For My Valentine, Buckcherry, Zodiac Mindwarp and Backyard Babies to name a few, always providing a safe haven for London's rockers and goths, punks and metallers alike. Always entertaining and fun, frequently deranged n' impossibly handsome the wily old Fox continues to rock this town like a motherfker...!!!
