MUSIC INDUSTRY HELP
BBC Kent Introducing Tip Of The Week
RELEASING A SINGLE
Step Two – Get Gigs
Once you have a confirmed release date, the next thing to do is get gigs arranged for the week of release. It’s best to try and not play until the release date itself, and then play as much as possible after that date. It is better to play a month after the release date than a week before it because punters will be able to go and buy something. Remember, if they see you and like you before they can actually buy something, they’ll probably just end up not buying it and forgetting all about it. It sounds easy to get people to log on to iTunes and buy your songs – sadly it is not. So you need to maximise your chances. The more people that see you after the single has been put up for sale, the better.
It’s obviously best to try and play in as many varying places as possible. If you think you can get enough people into London to see you, it’s well worth getting a gig there – but you should concentrate on places where you know you’ll get people to see you, and where you’re more likely to win new fans over. Most people enjoy seeing local bands over touring bands, so the Kent towns of Maidstone, Canterbury, Ashford and Chatham are perfect – 4 gigs in a week (or over the course of a month) in those places and you’ll be much better off than 3 gigs in Camden.
Third part to follow next week.

GIG REVIEW
Band Quest Metal Heat 5 @ The Drayman - 16/03/09
1st) Snakebite
2nd) Sanity Burns
3rd) Windhale
Another week and another heat in the Bexleyheath metal category of Band Quest, with 3 bands battling for a spot at Bloodstock!
When watching bands in this competition week in week out it is always a pleasure to hear one hit form. Tonight Snakebite (8/10) achieve a level you can imagine in a packed and sweaty tent at Bloodstock. The Bromley based four piece not only have their hearts nailed to the Pantera school of southern inspired thrash metal but have a collection of songs which tonight bludgeon the opposition. Vocalist Jason Smith owns the stage and barks at the crowd with all the confidence under the southern sun, with his powerful vocals excellently backed by the guitar of Andrew Matthews. The mosh pit hardly slowed throughout the set, and if anything sped up as the band hit top gear halfway through. Impressive stuff.
Any band would struggle to follow such a display and Windhale (6.5) end up sounding a little flat. Their keyboard driven classic power metal lacks the sheen that is so important with this style of music. The songs themselves are interesting and owe much to the likes of Helloween and Edguy, with some spendid guitar solos. Tonight though they lack the power and melody to muscle their way through.
Several months back Sanity Burns (7.5) played the Drayman and impressed anyone with an ear for good music. Tonight they didn't quite match those lofty heights but still managed to conjure up a musical feast. Their thrash onslaught sometimes treads into death metal territory with growling, rasping vocals which add an another exciting element to the music. Considering the band have not really played that many gigs their overall display is most impressive. Frazer Bowdery ensures each song contains neck snapping rhythmic guitar riffs, leaving James Phoenix to shower us with solos aplenty. Get ready people as Sanity Burns are one year away from kicking serious arse!
Overall, a good night of music where groove was king!
