RELEASING A SINGLE

Step Five – Who should you send your CD to?

Take your freshly printed press release. Now burn a copy of your release onto a CD – don’t try and make the CD look fancy. Even the biggest bands in the world tend to have white label promo CDs without artwork. All you need is a clear CD sleeve, a white label with your contact details on it to stick on the CD and a label with a paragraph about the release (normally taken from the press release) to stick on the sleeve itself. Then stuff everything you have into an envelope – and repeat this process until you have about 200 envelopes.

1) Radio stations – local and national. One to each different show that you think you have a chance to appear on. It’s a good idea to only send a CD to a show that you think would play your music – for example, if you’re in a thrash metal band; don’t send your CD to Trevor Nelson. It’s a waste of time. Do some research too – if you can find out the producer’s name, put that person’s name on the envelope instead of the DJ. It’s a good idea to make a list, and then simply send your CD to everyone on that list. If you end up getting radio airplay, try and keep a record of who has played you, as it will help you with future releases.

2) Press – internet, local and national. Look on the internet sites of all the broadsheet newspapers (The Guardian etc) and all dedicated music magazines that you know of. Again, get up to date names and addresses… research is everything. As with the radio stations, don’t send your CD to a specialist music magazine – Kerrang are unlikely to care too much about a new grime MC, for example.

3) Record companies and publishers. You can get lists in all kinds of Unsigned Guide books that are now available – get up to date contacts, and send them CDs. They will take more of an interest in a band that is clearly prepared to go that extra mile and sell their own music, and they are much more likely to take notice if you’re already starting to get radio airplay etc.

Please note that you should try and get to this stage (i.e having gigs sorted and having sent copies of the single to everyone) at least 10 weeks before the release date. Do not rush it and send the week before, or even a month before – the radio producers/press writers will not see it in time for the release date. Bear in mind how many CDs Zane Lowe, for example, receives a day – it will probably take at least 3 weeks to get on to the right desk. Weekly newspapers will be prepared well in advance too, so don’t miss the boat.

Sixth and final part to follow next week.

EP REVIEW

Circle of Rage - Curtains Up

Kent five-piece Circle of Rage return with the explosive three track EP, 'Curtains Up'.

EP opener 'Societys secret' travels along on a Mastodon-esque riff with bouts of Zakk Wylde and Mike Amott while the chorus is like a hit and run. It screeches up to you, does the damage and is gone before anyone realises what has hit them. 'Ignorance is this' sounds like an ugly meeting between Anti-flag and Mr Bungle. CD closer 'Justified revulsion' begins with some nice classic guitar which wouldn't have been out of place on the last Down release, followed by a menacing bass line before exploding into chaos which finally culminates in a good old group chanting hardcore chorus.

'Curtains Up' is a compulsive mix of hardcore frustrations, chiseled from the wall of talent that has been emerging from Kent over the past 3 years. Vocal styles interchange between orgasms of screaming adrenaline and well spoken English rawness, which retains interest throughout.

Don't be left out of the loop. Get into Circle of Rage now!
