GIG REVIEW
Darbex Band Quest (Metal Heat 7) @ Drayman - 07/04/08
ARXIS
THE FURIOUS HORDE
AVENGE THEE
With Silent Descent winning the second of the semi finals last week it was back to the normal heats - heat 7.
Bromley five-piece Arxis were an unknown quantity to a lot of people in Bexleyheath before tonight but their lively power metal set means that is no longer the case. What was most impressive about Arxis was their songs. They were powerful, immediate and showcased the all round excellence of the musicianship within the band. Some of the in-song guitar solos were superb although the individual solos between two of the songs quickly became tiresome. At times the vocals could have been louder but overall Bexleyheath will welcome Arxis back with open arms in three weeks time. (7.5/10)
After releasing an impressive debut album and decimating crowds in places such as Essex and Rochester The Furious Horde arrived at the Drayman as the biggest challenge to Arxis. The main problem with the performance was the sound never allowed them to reach the heights of Arxis before them. The guitars were nowhere to be found until the final two songs while the keyboards dominated the overall sound. Despite this they battled their way through a set of cradle-borgir inspired black metal, keeping the crowd in head banging action from start to finish. They finished the set in style with the best song of the night. (7/10)
Avenge Thee were a strange bunch. The songs were delivered with power and some of the riffs were big and meaty enough to strip the paint from the walls. Ultimely though they just never seemed to find that spark that was needed. The vocals were at times very Alsemo-like which is in itself impressive, especially alongside the aforementioned riffs. They even had the biggest headbanging session seen in months going for the latter part of their set. Despite this, where other bands have taken their influences and modified them into their own personal sounds, Avenge Thee have yet to do so but easily have enough quality to change that. (6.5/10)

If you want to help make this a massive success come to any of the 3 events this Sunday / Monday / Tuesday.
4 alternative bands needed – we need more bands to 'confirm' their intent to play.
We are doing this:
- 1x A Battle of the bands with a twist featuring show case events!
- 2x 20 track cds called 'scratch the surface' one heavy one light!
- 3x Magazine called Altascope, featuring all acts taking part and more!
We have now got 99 bands interested with 82 confirmed, so we are now taking on a reserve list and back up list in case any bands that have committed drop out or decide not to take part for what ever reason.
Therefore we ask 3 things of thee!
We are deep in talks with festivals and promoters about getting our bands playing for them. We have £7000 of prizes already committed and 1 in 3 bands will win something.
There will be:
- 100 bands playing by the end of this comp
- 2 x 20 track cds launched to support the quest
- 3 Magazines called Altascope covering ALL local music activity
- Around 400 playing musicians and 100 professional people involved in making this work
- 45 events with over 6000 people attending
- 20,000 flyers hand to hand
- 500 posters
