MUSIC INDUSTRY HELP
BBC Kent Introducing Tip Of The Week
RELEASING A SINGLE
Step Five – Who should you send your CD to?
1) Radio stations – local and national. One to each different show that you think you have a chance to appear on. It’s a good idea to only send a CD to a show that you think would play your music – for example, if you’re in a thrash metal band; don’t send your CD to Trevor Nelson. It’s a waste of time. Do some research too – if you can find out the producer’s name, put that person’s name on the envelope instead of the DJ. It’s a good idea to make a list, and then simply send your CD to everyone on that list. If you end up getting radio airplay, try and keep a record of who has played you, as it will help you with future releases.
2) Press – internet, local and national. Look on the internet sites of all the broadsheet newspapers (The Guardian etc) and all dedicated music magazines that you know of. Again, get up to date names and addresses… research is everything. As with the radio stations, don’t send your CD to a specialist music magazine – Kerrang are unlikely to care too much about a new grime MC, for example.
3) Record companies and publishers. You can get lists in all kinds of Unsigned Guide books that are now available – get up to date contacts, and send them CDs. They will take more of an interest in a band that is clearly prepared to go that extra mile and sell their own music, and they are much more likely to take notice if you’re already starting to get radio airplay etc.
Please note that you should try and get to this stage (i.e having gigs sorted and having sent copies of the single to everyone) at least 10 weeks before the release date. Do not rush it and send the week before, or even a month before – the radio producers/press writers will not see it in time for the release date. Bear in mind how many CDs Zane Lowe, for example, receives a day – it will probably take at least 3 weeks to get on to the right desk. Weekly newspapers will be prepared well in advance too, so don’t miss the boat.
Sixth part to follow next week.

GIG REVIEW
Gig review: Band Quest Metal Heat 8 @ The Drayman - 06/04/09
1st) Into Exile
2nd) Echoes Fall
3rd) P.O.S. 51
With a local 'supergroup' waiting to play this night was always going to have a threatning edge to it, but it was up to P.O.S. 51 (5.5/10) to begin proceedings. In the past their slight industrial edged nu-metal has failed to hit the target and tonight was no exception. Small chunks of the songs showed promise with some interesting guitar parts and enthusiastic drumming, but with bass lines all the over the place the songs struggled to remain cohesive. Frontwoman Annika Burgess' voice is probably the best instrument in the band but is somewhat held back by a nervousness which could be wiped clear after a consistant run of live performances. One of P.O.S. 51s best performances was at the Phoenix in Dartford several years ago which came at time when they were gigging more regularly.
Having only formed at the arse end of 2008, nobody would have expected Into Exile (8.5) to sound this good so quickly. With ex members of local heavyweights Bileduct and Without Remorse in the band it was always going to be brutal. The set they delivered to a packed out house was as unrelenting and fierce as anything else the Drayman has seen this year. The impressively powerful vocals were barked over sledgehammer riffs which in turn were underpinned by Napalm hot drumming. Myspace track 'Gorefields' already looks to be a local hit and like tonight, expect it to incite many more moshpits. The band already sound 'big' enough to appear at Bloodstock despite at times, this performance looking like it was their first together (which it was). The influences contained within their music vary but the most noteable would be that of fellow local metallers Denounce with a touch of The Inbreds which is no bad thing. Into Exile have blasted their way into contention with their debut gig. What can they achieve with their next two?
In a way Echoes Fall (8) can be considered unlucky because their performance tonight would have been good enough to win several of the earlier heats at the same venue. Their brand of deathcore was excellently delivered by a band who look to have plenty of live performances behind them. Some of the deathly riffs were sharp enough to knock the crowd back into mosh mode and singer Jamie Bennett's constant movement was the focal point for the entire 30 minutes. With or without this competition Echoes Fall will continue to impress and at the very least they made a new set of fans tonight.
