GIG REVIEW
Band Quest Kent Alt Final (Bull n Vic) - 23/05/10
Click on band or DJ links below for info:
One of the advantages of having non-metal bands under the 'alternative' umbrella is that you can have such an array of eclectic talent under one roof on an given day. Throughout the Band Quest competition the Kent Alternative category has probably been the most diverse and the final was no different.
Thanks to Escape From Alcatraz's last minute absence it was up to Maidstone trio EVERYONE'S STRAIGHT BUT KATE (7/10) to get things moving. Their quirky indie approach proved to be the perfect start to twelve hours of quality music. Despite being new to the game the bands character shone through, with each song containing a loose but catchy chorus. Alongside the music the cheeky banter with the crowd provided a refreshing and light-hearted air to the first half of the day.
The initial calmness is broken once THE CONSPIRACY THEORY (6) unleash their garage-style progressive rock on an unsuspecting public. The harshness of their sound would lend itself to a heavier direction but it is somehow restrained by their progressive leanings. This makes it hard for the band to really connect with the crowd today but this doesn't mean they are disappointing. Their set ends to a generous applause.
It was unfortunate THE GRAFTERS (7.5) were a man down for the final as they have really been one of the local discoveries of the year. Minus drums they performed an acoustic set which maybe lacked the full punch and swagger their Rolling Stones inspired rock deserves but at the same time showcased just how good their songs really are. 'She can't be the one' is merely one highlight of a fine set.
If The Grafters are one of the best new bands then STRANGERS LANE (7.5) are the surprise package. With four ex-Equinox members you could be excused for wondering where all the Dream Theater-esque mutterings have gone. In truth Equinox has been exposed as a form of musical straight-jacket for individual members as the bluesy 70s rock they belt out today goes down a storm. The rhythm section provides a sometimes funky spine to some of the finest guitar solos of the day from Anthony Rogers. The likes of 'Weeping' basks in a jam-like state, never losing cohesion and keeping one of the biggest crowds of the day moving throughout. Front man Warren Holmes may at times sing like an American preacher, but he's enthusiasm is infectious and so is the set.
It's been a long hard trip for THIS BLANK PAGE (7), surviving a potentially lethal car accident earlier in the year on top of a long trek from Colchester each time they played their Band Quest heats. It wasn't just determination that got them to the final but a collection of top songs like 'Voodoo in the basement' which Prince would have been proud of writing. Their highly melodic tunes manage to touch everything from jazz to indie to funk to pop. Today the keyboards are little further down in the mix giving the band a more gritty sound. This doesn't seem to bother the crowd though. This Blank Page have picked up a lot of new fans in Band Quest this year and deservedly so.
Compared to most of the other bands in the final TRASH MONROE (8) are further down the line. Their debut album is already out; they have played at popular venues in London such as the Gaff and supported the likes of Die So Fluid. The trash rock buzz of 'Lord loss' and 'Is this it' are among the best songs of the day, with singer Melany Dantes showcasing her superb vocal prowess. Her voice along with some nice guitar work from Brad Hurr leaves the crowd transfixed, the slower numbers taking them on a musical journey that will last in the memories of the Dartford throng for a long time to come.
CITIES FALL SILENT (8) come armed with the biggest support and a clutch of irrisistable alternative pop punk nuggets. In what must be the most entergetic set of the day they slam the crowd into submission, with 'Confess! Confess!' doing the most damage. The guest vocalists (including Subversion keyboardist Chaz Barnes) add another layer to a superb Band Quest Kent Alternative title winning display.
Only last year COLT.44 (7.5) were playing in the Kent Metal final, and were one of the lightest bands on taking part. This year they have been one of the heaviest bands in the Kent Alternative heats but that hasn't stopped them reaching the final, becoming the first band ever to reach the finals in 2 different categories in the process. 'Tear myself away' is just one example of why they have been so successful, its chorus managing to combine all what was good about 90s hard rock into a tightly packed ball of energy. Main man Adam Jerome leaps around while hammering the guitar and spitting the lyrics in a fine performance that ends the competitive portion of the day in style.
The first of the special guest headliners were emo four-piece KYOTO DRIVE (7.5) from Birmingham who manage to unleash the catchiest set of songs heard in Dartford for a long time. The fact that more than half of the crowd disappeared outside because their 'mates' band had finished playing says a lot about peoples attitudes towards music. Kyoto Drive take it in their stride though and their professionalism and song writing ability shines through.
It's not hard to see why IN THE RED (7.5) won last years Alternative final. Their songs have a certain majesty about them, sounding important and effective as well as hitting the target. As their classic rock inspired set comes to an end the Kent Alternative side of Band Quest is over for another year.

Band Quest Kent Metal Final @ Red Lion - 30/05/10
Click on band or DJ links below for info:
It was only a year ago when Snakebite stormed to the Bloodstock Metal 2 The Masses Kent title with Denounce taking the overall Band Quest honours. A year can be a long time though and since then some of the local acts had split, fallen into a state of comatose or simply moved on.
While Falling Empire opened up last years final with a ferocious set of stomping metalcore, it was down to the more measured approach of TRAINING INCARUS (7.5/10) this time round. With the clean and cutting guitar solos from Martin Eldon and soaring vocals of Leigh Turner the bands well constructed and hook-laden metal songs made for a perfect start to the day, 'Nightmares' ending the set off nicely.
INNER FIRE (8) are on something of a roll at the moment, improving with every performance. Today was no exception as they pummelled the early crowd with a relentless barrage of melodic metal. Both Alex Lewis and Nik Sampson were on top form exchanging guitar solos in a thrilling and pulsating thirty minute set. The level of intensity that now emanates from Inner Fire in a live environment is sometimes frightening, boding well for a possible charge for Bloodstock next year. SEVEN (6) by contrast were off the pace. Their traditionally aimed power metal never hit home despite containing some of the best melodies of the day.
There were no such problems for a certain Dartford 5-piece. If any band on the day smashed the sound barrier it was self proclaimed progressive film-score metallers SPLINTERED SOUL (8). Mandi Bailey's operatic vocal style set them apart from the other bands, with the likes of 'The epic' crashing around the venue in all its pomp and majesty. It was a performance far removed from the shaky semi-final set and one which will see them grace Bloodstock next year.
Hardcore mob KARYBDIS (7.5) were virtually unknown in these parts before the final, but their whirlwind stomach punch of a set meant that is no longer the case. Front man Gil Renault bounces with uncontrollable energy across the stage spitting out the vocals like a Jamey Jasta on speed. By the end of the set most of the crowd had been sucked into the core with Karybdis walking away with a venue load of new fans. One of the pleasures of Band Quest 2010 has been the sight of sludgy heavyweights KILL THE MACHINE (7) destroying their London stronghold, the New cross Inn. Today the bass-heavy thud of their Crowbar-come-Gates of Slumber ambush doesn't seem as potent in the larger spaces of the Red Lion. Despite this the number of heads slowly banging to 'Control' is an achievement in itself. They will most likely cause a bigger bang in the London final in June.
Next up were local metallers SANITY BURNS (8), who were unquestionably one of the best new bands in last years competition until they fell to the sublime Snakebite. It was always going to be interesting to see how they took to it this year and they answered any doubters by storming through their heats into the final. Sounding like Testament fronted by Randy Blythe they now have the stage presence to really push their fine collection of thrash arrangements into the faces of all before them. In one of the best supported performances of the day Sanity Burns blitz Gravesend with a superb display of riffs and aggression. Front man Chris Simmons covers the entire stage on at least ten occasions, but in a way which includes the crowd, dragging any non-believers by the hair kicking and screaming into the malestorm of their music. They may currently cling a little too hard to their influences but if their milatry like improvement continues another serious attempt at playing Bloodstock is surely on the horizon.
Canterbury metallers CALLOUS (6.5) are one slick outfit, pushing out some fine guitar solos throughout their performance. Unfortunately the Gravesend crowd never really takes to their Trivium-for-a-Valentine style set leaving the venue thirsting for something a little grittier in the form of ZOCALO (7.5).
Over the last 3-4 years Zocalo have become the daddies (and mothers...) of local groove metal and today their familiarity shines through. The bluesy rhythms emanating from Pete Humphries guitar have really come into their own during Band Quest 2010, set free by the addition of an extra guitarist. Today’s performance was more of a sun drenched stroll in the park thanks to a set made up of mid-paced southern ditties rather than the Clutch bothering roller coasters that were their heat and semi final gigs. This didn't bother the beer swilling crowd though as Zocalo grabbed the additional Bloodstock spot and the overall Band Quest title. Zocalo have proved that good old hard work combined with a little southern comfort can bring its rewards.
Having played Bloodstock only 2 years previously CURSED AS ANGELS (7.5) were one of the more experienced bands on the bill. With a local crowd to be proud of they treated their home support to a set of crushing metal anthems. They are blessed with some of the finest material in the competition, which helped them to be voted one of the best unsigned bands in the UK by TotalRock in 2008. Ex Fleshwound front man Pete Bickerstaffe had big shoes to fill when he took over vocal duties and it may take a while for his differing style to make the earth shattering impact the band really needed today.
If Orange Goblin are part of the paintwork at the CroBar then Denounce (8) are the metal foundations on which the Red Lion stands. Playing as guest headliners after the competitive part of the day was over their cutting edge metal onslaught was all that was needed to sap the last remnants of energy left in anyone. Their violent take of melodic metal has wowed everyone from Bloodstock, Terrorizer, Metal Hammer and Zero Tolerance. Today they go about their business as usual, battering the crowd into submission, the likes of 'Solace' burning the faces off anyone too close to the raging inferno on stage.
As Denounce bring the day to a close the results are announced and everyone is left looking forward to a Bloodstock Festival featuring the likes of Cannibal Corpse, Devin Townsend, Children of Bodom, Meshuggah AND Splintered Soul and Zocalo.

GIG REVIEW
Band Quest Essex Metal Final @ Edge Bar, Romford - 31/05/10
Click on band or DJ links below for info:
The dust had barely settled from the monumental day of metal that was the Kent final before everything started again, but this time it was the turn of Essex. Romford has hardly held open its arms for Band Quest, with most local acts playing in London and others having to travel long distances to play. All of this was irrelevant though as the bands present had got to the final on merit and in difficult circumstances.
First up were MERCILESS FAIL (7.5) who have been something of a breath of fresh air in the competition. Their sound harks back to the early eighties when the likes of Venom were spreading their dark gospel across the heavy metal landscape, but with the contemporary crunch of Testament. Armed with a set of catchy and well constructed songs Merciless Fail impress today, 'Forged in black' being a particular highlight, complete with its gigantic and doom laden Sabbath-esque main riff.
Another band with both feet fully in the thrall of 80s metal is SNAKE EYES (7.5) who seemed to have saved their best form for the final. Paul Clarke's voice of the God's are as powerful as ever, hitting the top notes in style, while the lead guitar from Oz Marshall cuts through the early day atmosphere like a burning axe in a peasants straw hut. The skulls and swords add a visual aspect which many a band ignore in today’s climate. The choice of songs means the set is nicely balanced with 'Leather and metal' taking all that was good about early Judas Priest and ramming it down the throats of the sizeable crowd. Pain killers were definitely not needed.
In their heats IONISE (6) seemed to exert a kind of contagious vibe but today they seem a little flat, coming and going without much fuss. The same cannot be said for thrashy metalcore outfit ERADICATION (8.5), who blast a musical crater the size of a third world country into the Edge Bar. Bursting with energy the band covers every inch of the stage and the floor immediately in front of them. Every riff hits home like a mesmerising electric drill, leading to most of the venue shuffling forward to witness this outlet of aggression. The breakdowns erupt with a venom never seen in these parts before, with 'Rendered useless' showcasing the explosive talent in a perfect 4 and a bit minutes. The band may not be going to Bloodstock but from the all of the acts today future success quivers at the feet of Eradication, with or without a festival slot.
With guest bands performing upstairs there was a chance to break away from the competitive element of the day, with SILICONE BULLET (7.5) providing the first dose of sleazy riffs. The cock rock swagger was perfect medication from the heavier sounds emanating from the downstairs room. Front man Bobby Valentine lives for the stage and his Roth-esque movements add another dimension to a nicely received set of hard rocking tracks.
Back downstairs it was the turn of the first of the two London bands in the form of BRUTAI (8). Having virtually obliterated the competition in their heat and semi they were one of the favourites in the final and their melodic death metal at times threatened to make that Bloodstock dream a reality, although not with as much metallic might as previously. The souring 'Epiphany' cries out to be heard by a crowd of thousands though and is one of the highlights of the day.
It can never be easy to follow Brutai but SILAS (7.5) have something about them. The songs stick themselves inside the head, each intricate melody clinging to a brain cell, causing a musical surge to the brain. The mushy sound may have lessoned their impact today but the performance was enough to grab the unsigned slot at Bloodstock. Like Zocalo the day before this wasn't about today but some damn hard work from a fine band over the last 2-3 years.
The first of the winning semi final bands were black metallers THE FURIOUS HORDE (7.5). After various line-up changes they have been back to their best in this year’s competition and today impress the crowd with their dark musical offerings. Vocalist Ruptured Souls rasps every lyric in such a sinister way they are like the musical equivalent of following a knife-wielding mad man down a dark alleyway.
When a band slowly improves year on year it makes victory all the sweeter. Suffolk five-piece ECHOES FALL (8) are the perfect example of this and today they grab the Bloodstock Metal 2 The Masses slot with a set of highly energetic metalcore. Like Eradication the breakdowns on show here are like mini nuclear devices, splitting the crowd into a mass of crumpled bodies. All of this makes NEAR DEATH EXPERIMENT (7) sound a little tired. The set is delivered professionally with some nice melodic choruses but any energy left in the crowd has long been sucked from them by the explosive power of Echoes Fall.
With the competitive part of the day over it was up to a trio of guest bands to finish off the evening, starting with KILLING WITH STYLE (7.5) upstairs. The sleazy hard rock that was the main element of their sound when they played this venue earlier in the year has now been beefed up by a shot of punky freshness. This is mainly thanks to bassist Beka Pritchards taking over vocal duties, adding a NY Loose-esque rawness to proceedings. Their Lady Ga Ga cover goes down surprisingly well among the fast growing crowd of metal heads. Techno metallers SILENT DISCENT (7.5) have been quiet of late but their new members seemed to have settled quickly as they turn the main room into a late night rave, complete with pulsating dance beats and flashing lights. The band are not all about dance though and it's the influence of bands such as Soilwork which jump out from their musical din and grab the more metallic in the venue. Essex success story FOREVER NEVER (8) finish off the day the only way they now how. Having played the likes of Download already and having recently supported Fozzy the band know how to light up a crowd. They have no problems plucking songs from their 2 albums to do just that, sending everyone home happy in the process.
After the results are announced and fans of both Echoes Fall and Silas are running around excitedly thinking about seeing their favourite bands at Bloodstock the night draws to an end. Band Quest in Essex is finally over.

SINGLE REVIEW
Morcheeba - Even Though
Low-key indie-ambient purveyors, Morcheeba gracefully amble into seventh album territory, with the caressing instrumental led single, 'Even Though'. It's boosted in no small part, by the soulful vocal glide of Skye.
Mogwai and Four Tet territory is carefully stepped into, but Morcheeba's staunch independence still comes across through their mood building, guitar led instrumental subtlety. Despite the low-key approach, the warming, coasting delivery means that this is certainly not just background music.
With such a hovering, soulfully subtle lead vocal stance, some bold backing vocals are needs and they are timed perfectly. Morcheeba, again, will provide a stirring accompaniment to any hazy summer's evening.

Metal Blade is proud to announce the signing of the Slovenian Thrash Metal Kings NEGLIGENCE!
NEGLIGENCE was formed in 2000 by Dyz and Jey, two excellent Slovenian guitarists who shared the same passion for music and decided to start working together. They soon found a proper and stable line-up and played lots of shows in their homeland Slovenia including a gig at the infamous Metal Camp festival. Between 2003 and 2005 they also released three unnamed demos.
2005 marks a turning point in the history of NEGLIGENCE when they parted ways with their old singer and presented the 15-year old Alex as their new frontman. The band gathered a bigger fanbase and in 2007 NEGLIGENCE independently released their debut album Options Of A Trapped Mind. The album opened many new doors for the group and got a good reception amongst metal fans and received great reviews worldwide. Following the release, the band went on to promote their album supporting some of the biggest acts in metal, such as Exodus, Forbidden, Heathen, Sadus and Death Angel among others.
At the end of 2009, long-time member Dyz parted ways with the band but was still part of the pre-production for the second album NEGLIGENCE recorded. The folks at Metal Blade were all excited about what they heard and signed NEGLIGENCE right away.
Comments the band: "We are very, very proud to become a member of one of the greatest metal record labels in the world and will proudly carry the flag of true metal enthusiasts and metal gurus which is Metal Blade Records!"
As we speak NEGLIGENCE are busy with the mix of their second album which will be entitled Coordinates Of Confusion! More production details will be announced shortly.
NEGLIGENCE have recently found a second guitar player - his name is Aljo - who will help increasing the sheer power the band is able to deliver on stage!
Coordinates Of Confusion is set for release for a late summer 2010 release!
