RELEASING A SINGLE

Step Four – sending loads of things to loads of people

Take your freshly printed press release. Now burn a copy of your release onto a CD – don’t try and make the CD look fancy. Even the biggest bands in the world tend to have white label promo CDs without artwork. All you need is a clear CD sleeve, a white label with your contact details on it to stick on the CD and a label with a paragraph about the release (normally taken from the press release) to stick on the sleeve itself. Then stuff everything you have into an envelope – and repeat this process until you have about 200 envelopes.

Another week and another heat in the Bexleyheath metal category of Band Quest, with 3 bands battling for a place at Bloodstock!

It's been an interesting Band Quest so far in that a number of bands who have gone out the early stages have shown some real potential. These include Sanity Burns, Venxia and now Storm the Gates.

Tonight as first band on Storm the Gates (7.5/10) really set the tempo for the night. Their contempory trad metal sounds like it will develop into a force over the next year. The singers sometimes melodic, sometime growling vocals drift over a flurry of maiden-esque riffs and melodies which push some well written songs into the faces of the crowd. Will be very interesting to see these guys over the next year.

Second band Havoc System (7.5) had the odds stacked against them immediately after turning up without a drummer. Despite this they made a good show of it and their hard driving modern metal attack always seemed to be one of maturity and power. Because Silent Descent played Bloodstock last year Havoc System go through to a play off in their place after finishing second. If they can get a drummer before then their opposition should be wary.

Local trance metallers Silent Descent (8) were always odds on to win this heat, but the bands impressive live showing shouldn't be taken lightly. They have graced the Bloodstock 2008 stage as last years winners of course. On one side the melodic vocals and melodies which impressed so much on their excellent 2008 album 'Duplicity' (which finished in the top 20 of the Rock Matrix top albums of last year) don't quite reach those heights live tonight. On the up side this band know how to pull the most out of each of their tracks and this is where they are outstanding. Each beat, riff and solo are all rung to maximum effect, and at times the band seems to float on their own momentum. Singer Tom Watling is a true frontman, commanding the packed crowd from start to finish. The choruses are sung back to them as if they have been around for years and the mosh pit has only been dwarfed by the last Silent Descent mosh pit here a year ago in 2008s final. Silent Descent have probably still to hit top gear in the live arena but anyone who has seen them live can probably guess what that will be like, and will pay top dollar to be there.
