GIG REVIEW

Band Quest Metal Semi Final 3 @ The Drayman - 27/04/09

1st) Snakebite
2nd) Falling Empire
3rd) Violation Complex

Another week and another semi final in the Bexleyheath metal category of Band Quest, with 3 bands battling for a place at Bloodstock!

When three of your local big hitters meet each other in a semi final it is always going to be a night of great music. Technical death metallers Violation Complex (7.5/10) started things off in their usual way. Twisted riffs guided the songs while the three pronged vocal attack ensured everyones interest was maintained in the early stages. They finished their set with arguably the best song of the night, although some may feel that Violation Complex should have more to offer in the next year or so. All their material hints at more progressive, thrashy or simply heavier influences and if these can be pushed to the forefront they could possibly have a bigger arsenal of material ready for next years competition.

A band that has done a good job of maintaining its momentum the past year is Falling Empire (7). The way in which they overturned former finalists Zocalo in their first heat was nothing short of bone crunching. Tonight though their in-your-face metalcore attack lacked that usual edge that everyone had expected. Out of the three bands on the night Falling Empire struggled the most with the muffled sound with the softer vocal moments failing to deliver the melody which would have lifted the tracks to another level. Despite this they still managed to get the crowd whipped into a frenzy, even causing security to investigate what all the shoving and frantic head movement was all about. With this set of songs that hit you like sharp hammer blows to the face Falling Empire will be back before we know it.

You would have to be deaf or extremely lacking in musical knowledge to not have realised by now that Snakebite (8) worship at the alter of Pantera. Of course, they are just one of thousands of bands up and down the country and the world who do the same but Snakebite probably do it a lot better than most. Tonight they are a league above the proceeding two bands. The rhythem section make it all sound so easy while the guitar players hair and beard are the only things closer to Dimebag than some of his excellent meaty southern riffs. The vocals hit the target on all the songs, which themselves are delivered with confidence by a band who know how to entertain the crowd, fill the stage and play a damn good set at the same time. The other finalists have been warned - Snakebite are poisonous!

AS I LAY DYING

AS I LAY DYING's first-ever DVD, "This Is Who We Are", sold 4,200 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 2 on the Top Music Videos chart. It also debuted at No. 3 in Canada, where the DVD has already shipped platinum.

Commented AS I LAY DYING frontman Tim Lambesis: "I'm completely honored to have our DVD reach so many people in only its first week out. Needless to say, it's a great achievement for our band, but it also goes to show that metal music has been opening new doors. Regardless of what mainstream media pushes, there are enough diehard fans out there to make something like this happen."

With "This Is Who We Are", AS I LAY DYING steps into new territory by releasing its first-ever DVD consisting of three discs produced and directed by Denise Korycki (CANNIBAL CORPSE's "Centuries of Torment"DVD) that provide viewers with live performances and a complete AS I LAY DYING audio/visual history.
