GIG REVIEW
Darbex Band Quest (Metal Semi Final 1) @ Drayman - 25/02/08
WITHOUT REMORSE
ZOCALO
VIOLATION COMPLEX
Upon knowing the bill for tonight's Darbex Heat Semi final I became excited. A 3-way heavyweight contest of immense proportion, one band walking away a step closer to Bloodstock Festival. Without Remorse earn their golden ticket to the final, by 1% difference.
'Without Remorse'
This heavy thrash band in the same vein as Lamb of God and Pantera opened the night, going straight into 5th gear setting the tempo for the event. To the sound of thundering riffs and pounding drums, they make themselves noticed on this stage. Demonic vocals, structured songs, with the kind of riffs to make you head bang all night. Nothing was over the top and it was really hard to find any faults in this set. A definite hot tip for a high slot at summer's local events if this is anything to go by. (9/10)
'Zocalo'
They immediately take to the stage with charisma, experience and tight set. Holding their own in night full of aggressive vocals they balance melody with crunching riffs, complimented by southern grooves. As close as your going to get sound wise is like a metal Led Zeppelin. Performing this unique blend, you also have to struggle to find anything wrong in this set. Thoroughly entertaining and keeping everyone's attention they easily go head to head Without Remorse in this heat. (8.5/10)
'Violation Complex'
With a set that immediately grabs your interest, it's just so different and exciting. Having only recently appeared on the local scene and getting into the Semi Finals is a massive achievement in anyone's books. Sounding like bands such as Mastodon mixed with Machine Head, they create a massive wall of sound throughout. Tight songs, three in your face vocals and phenomenal drumming. You have to wonder if they played their last two fantastic songs too late. The crowd were already voting after their first song. (8/10)

METAL BLADE NEWS
MAYLENE AND THE SONS OF DISASTER - New line up and new record!
A message from DALLAS TAYLOR:
We have some news to announce. Maylene has recently undergone a line-up change.
Due to the rigors of the road Lee Turner, Scott Collum and Josh Williams are no longer in the band. We remain good friends and wish them the best of luck and continued success.
As for Maylene and the Sons of Disaster we are better than ever. We are excited to announce our new members: Chad Huff, Kelly Scott Nunn and Matt Clark.
They have been long time friends of ours and some are former band-mates. You might know them from their work in Underoath, Further Seems Forever, Sleeping By the Riverside and Gods.
Josh Cornutt remains in the band but being a newlywed he is currently at home spending time with his wife (and writing for our next record).
We have also started working on a new record and we are really excited by the material the new guys are coming up with.
Thank all of you for all the support, and believe me nothing has changed in the Maylene camp we are just growing a lot and you can expect us to be better than ever.

If you want to help make this a massive success come to any of the 3 events this Sunday / Monday / Tuesday.
4 alternative bands needed – we need more bands to 'confirm' their intent to play.
We are doing this:
- 1x A Battle of the bands with a twist featuring show case events!
- 2x 20 track cds called 'scratch the surface' one heavy one light!
- 3x Magazine called Altascope, featuring all acts taking part and more!
We have now got 99 bands interested with 82 confirmed, so we are now taking on a reserve list and back up list in case any bands that have committed drop out or decide not to take part for what ever reason.
Therefore we ask 3 things of thee!
We are deep in talks with festivals and promoters about getting our bands playing for them. We have £7000 of prizes already committed and 1 in 3 bands will win something.
There will be:
- 100 bands playing by the end of this comp
- 2 x 20 track cds launched to support the quest
- 3 Magazines called Altascope covering ALL local music activity
- Around 400 playing musicians and 100 professional people involved in making this work
- 45 events with over 6000 people attending
- 20,000 flyers hand to hand
- 500 posters
- 33 prizes worth over £7500
- Media, Radio, Record label support and coverage
- And a bucket loads of bloody great nights in good venues!
All further enquiries and questions will be answered only through darbex@rockmatrix.co.uk
