GIG REVIEW

Ozzy Osbourne @ Roundhouse, Chalk Farm - 03/07/10

Ozzy Osbourne

Click on band or DJ links below for info:

OZZY OSBOURNE

It was something of a surprise when the Prince of Darkness was announced to be playing as part of the iTunes festival at the Roundhouse. Live music for this event is usually aimed at people who rarely look into the murky world of metal. The mainly ticket winning crowd were a mix of full-time rockers and the curious music fan, interested in seeing Mr Ozzy Osbourne in the flesh for the first time.

First of the two openers BLACK SPIDERS (7.5/10) seem to have been here, there and everywhere recently and their Sabbath-esque grooves were perfect for this support slot tonight. Songs such as 'St Peter' appeal to both the young and the old, the classic solos going down a storm with the early crowd.

THE SWORD (7.5) are heavier than their predecessors and even more indebted to Sabbath for the influence they have had over their music to date. When they supported Metallica at the O2 there were fears they would be swallowed up by the sheer size of the stage. That never happened though as their music's muscular riffs cling to the crowd like dying hands, the likes of 'Freya' sounding simply enormous in the 360 degree surroundings of this Chalk Farm venue.

As well as the support bands did they were never going to outshine the Prince of Darkness himself. Opening with the timeless 'Bark at the moon' OZZY OSBOURNE (8) reminded everyone (as if people need reminding...) why he is still such a popular figure in heavy metal. New track 'Let me hear you scream' follows with plenty of crowd participation during the chorus. This was the only track taken from new album ‘Scream’ but expect more in September when the band return to these shores. When you see the double O live you again realise how much classic material he has at his disposal, the likes of 'Mr crowley' still sending shivers down the spine twenty years after its release and hearing 'Suicide solution' is always a pleasure. Unsurprisingly, Ozzy Osbourne's history will always be weighted in favour of the Black Sabbath years. Tonight 'Fairies wear boots' and 'Iron man' are aired during the main set, Ozzy having every body in the house firmly in his palm.

Ozzy gets up to his usual mischief, throwing enough buckets of water into the crowd to fill a hundred baths or drown a hundred squirrels. When he isn't doing this he is clapping or shouting at the thousands ahead of him, always moving like a never ending ball of energy. The only time he stops is when he departs the stage to allow the band members their own slots. Newest member Tommy Clufetos is a powerhouse on drums and leaves people open mouthed with one of the best drum solos performed in a long time. A lot has been said over the past year about the departure of Zakk Wylde and even more about the new guitarist, Firewind's Gus G. In truth his classical European style playing is a near match made in Heaven for a lot of the Ozzy classics such as 'Shot in the dark', with Adam Wakeman's keyboards providing that eerie backing that was such an important part of the 80s material.

We all know Ozzy can be soppy. His love for big ballads has always been present and tonight both 'Road to nowhere' and 'Mama, i'm coming home' provide the quieter moments. The combination of 'Crazy train' and 'War pigs' inevitably goes down a storm. The power of 'War pigs' be it in front of three thousand or eighty thousand people is simply electrifying, providing the evening with it's first mass sing-a-long moment. 'Paranoid' draws things to a close in apocalyptic fashion, with arms and legs’ flying through the air as the mosh pit overheats to possibly the most famous metal song of all time.

It seemed over too quickly. Ozzfest can't come soon enough.

Brutai + Deprevate @ New Cross Inn - 08/07/10

Brutai

Click on band or DJ links below for info:

BRUTAI

On a steamy July evening, in an intimate and shadowy little bar in New Cross, an explosive electric storm is brewing. In the melting pot, the impressive antecedent to that storm is unleashed in the form of DEPREVATE (8/10). A relentless cocktail of catchy grooves, tightly synchronised Bullet For My Valentine-esque harmonies and a clever penchant for seamlessly fusing minor-key riffs and verses to major-key choruses, is locked under the impressive vocal range and likeable magnetism of frontman Rich Sumner. With notable tunes including 'The Juggernaught Bitch' and 'Suffer In Silence', the foursome's incisions of picked arpeggios within gritty sustain-chord foundations, and lyrics channelled through Rich's uncanny tonal similarity at times to Staind's Aaron Lewis, equip the group with an undeniable American hard-rock vibe; splinters of the likes of Creed and 3 Doors Down are deeply embedded, tilted by a pop-thrash feel, and the American flag across the drum kit serves testament of more than a little irony. Practiced, slick, yet rough and tough round the edges, Deprevate would be commercially well-received, and are a fine authority on a great musical night out - just ask the raucous audience before them.

But the undoubted climax of tonight's storm is BRUTAI (9). A crucible of technical refinement, infused with ungoverned animal passion and infectious charisma, Brutai exist as a composite of juxtapositions: their very own hybrid theory. Catford's finest dark quartet alight the stage tonight with an evident creative chemistry perfectly offset by four distinct stage personalities. Lead guitarist Henry Ryan's lightening virtuosity is showcased through numbers such as 'Epiphany' and '1 out of 1'; a nexus of highly-charged riffs, tapping and harmonies offers a sprinkling of Maiden, rhythmically anchored by a layered and atmospheric density to throw a pinch of Trivium or Atreyu to the recipe - all compressed within well-structured enough tunes to answer only to their own name. Vocalist Felix Lawrie hollers a menagerie of gruffness to shame Dani 'Cradle' Filth, yet injects capsules of melody to lay a varied and euphonious polish to the overall quality of each song: defining the contemporary, yet original concept of Brutai. Before their 6-foot wall of noise and brutality stands a crowd bewitched by the pounding, primal potency of a band who master speed and accuracy, yet forego pretension and are equipped instead with raw power: who speak to the core of primitivism residing deep within all of us.

In the light, and indeed dark, of their first hosted gig, and their securing of the first of many respectable artistic milestones, experience Brutai for yourself. You will understand a force at work far stronger than purely musical entertainment.

FESTIVAL REVIEW

DV8 @ Various York venues - 15-19/07/10

DV8 Festival

Click on band or DJ links below for info:

THE EDEN HOUSE

WAYNE HUSSEY

GENE LOVES JEZEBEL

There are so many goth nights, gigs and clubs in London now you can't turn a corner without stumbling into one. This isn't always a bad thing but it was nice to get away from the big smoke and escape to York for the weekend for a stint of site-seeing and of course the inaugural DV8 Festival.

Starting with the Deviation club 10 year party night on the Thursday things kicked off in style. The bands began on the Friday evening at a host of venues including the Duchess, Fibbers and Stereo which was a little further away. Over the course of the weekend the Duchess was home to more of the traditional goth bands. The more electronic inclined acts could be seen at Fibbers while Stereo saw more of the post punk/death rock side of things.

The first day at the Duchess was impressive with GROOVING IN GREEN (7/10) and VENDEMMIAN (7) putting in good performances, with 'Masquerade' proving to be every bit as irrisitable as it was all those years ago. Meanwhile downstairs at Fibbers KOMMAND + KONTROL (7.5) were given York a dose of highly energetic industrial electro which really shook DV8 to the core. When THE EDEN HOUSE (8) exploded onto the scene last year their debut album 'Smoke and Mirrors' along with their live performances were met with universal acclamation. Tonight their headlining set at the Duchess was nearly as impressive. Once again Tony Pettit's bass lines dominated the sound, thumping against the low ceiling of the venue, causing the music to wrap itself around the listeners. It may take a little while for the newer singers to find their feet but Faith and The Muse vocalist Monica Richards is the star of the show, despite singing less than on previous occasions. 'To believe in something' was one of the highlights of the weekend and possibly one of the best goth songs of the noughties.

The Up The Racket club night that followed managed to keep the majority of the crowd inside with it's goth and dark alternative soundtrack. It may have surprised some of the regulars who were expecting the usual indie songs but by the end of the night those people were also on the dance floor.

After another day of site seeing on Saturday ones feet were calling for a rest but there was still a whole evening of music ahead. LUXURY STRANGER (8) did a good job of supporting Voices of Masada at Slimelight a few months ago and they impressed again at DV8. Vocalist-guitarist Simon York is the focal point with big hair and a black and white painted face, his Robert Smith-esque voice complementing the post punk-new wave sound of the band. Next up was the last ever live performance from self-styled trashVogue art rockers SCREAMING BANSHEE AIRCREW (8). Having released their best album to date in the form of 'Sugar' last year it was no surprise most of the material came from this. 'So sorry' alone shows how far the band have come, keeping the quirkiness of the Fishnet Messiah-era material but also containing a more refined structure. The crowd in front of them remain transfixed throughout the set, serving as a nice send off to a band that looked like they had finally hit their stride.

One of the surprises of the festival was ROMANCE (8). Their new wave-come-indie attack went down a storm despite their fears that they weren't a 'goth' band. The crowd grew along with the cheers as the bleach blonde singer's voice cracked open the Duchess and quite a few ears all in one go. You can except to hear more from these guys. EBM crew V2A (6) sounded slightly muted at Fibbers while back at the Duchess INKUBUS SUKKUBUS (7.5) had the tough task of following Romance. The energy levels may have dropped but the band have been around long enough not to fold under such circumstances and set things up nicely for WAYNE HUSSEY (7.5) who's set is a little sullen for a Saturday night headliner. Despite this, with help of some Mission classics he has the entire venue under his control. The announcement of some live activity from a reunited The Mission next year makes more goths smile in the Duchess than a lottery winner’s convention.

The Popaganda club night that follows initially keeps to the goth-friendly vibe until Girls Aloud sends some people running out the doors to the Darklands Club at Stereo, which play a nice mix of everything goth.

Back at the Duchess on the Sunday ZEITGEIST ZERO (6.5) suffer from sound problems with even 'Dance of the fallen' struggling to battle through the mix. Zeitgeist Zero was the only band to have played all three venues over the weekend so the sound couldn't have been as bad for all of them. This was followed by a quick trip to Stereo to catch DEATH BY ROCK N ROLL Feat. JOOLZ (6). They were basically a set of readings to a backing band. A look in Fibbers saw DIGICORE (7) blasting the venue doors open with possibly the heaviest and closest to metal performance of the festival. One of the other great performances of the weekend came from PRETENTIOUS, MOI? (8) at the Duchess. This fine example of energised goth would have ended the festival in style but that was the job of GENE LOVES JEZEBEL (6). Unfortunately it was a rather tepid affair with even 'The motion of love' seeming drab in comparison to what have gone before, earlier in the day.

The 80s club night ended the festival, playing everything from Falco, The Mission, Pet Shop Boys to Sisters of Mercy and The Smiths to a mainly packed floor until 3am.

If you haven't visited York before you are advised to do so as the gothic architecture, dungeons, cathedrals and museums are a must see. You could of course wait and visit this fine city next year around the same time as say... DV8 2011. You know you want to - we do, again!

FESTIVAL REVIEW

High Voltage @ Victoria Park - 24-25/07/10

High Voltage Festival

Click on band links below for info:

ZZ TOP

ELP

It seems to have been a never-ending wait for a 'proper' London rock festival. For us folks in the capital it was an opportunity to enjoy a two day festival but slump into our own beds at the end of the night (or early hours of the morning).

The inaugural High Voltage festival was unique, not just because of its location but because of its three specific stages. The main stage concentrated on the bigger classic rock bands, the prog stage; well that is self explanatory, leaving the Metal Hammer stage to feature bands who you often find with column inches in said magazine. The beauty of this was that you could decide to stay at one stage or visit each one knowing more or less the kind of music you were about to listen to. On top of this the site was small and cosy, meaning each stage was a mere 2-5 minutes apart, adding to the already chilled atmosphere. The tower blocks powering past the perimeter fences were a stark reminder of the closeness of the millions of people that make the city though.

Delays to the London underground meant we arrived at the site on Saturday as the BLACK SPIDERS (7.5/10) were laying down some Sabbath-esque riffs on the Metal Hammer stage. They helped wake the crowd at the Roundhouse earlier in the month as support to Ozzy Osbourne and they did the same here, but this time in the blazing sun. THE UNION (7) kicked off proceedings on the main stage with a nice early blast of classic blues rock. The combination of ex Thunder guitarist Luke Morley and former Winterville front man Peter Shoulder was always going to be interesting and 'Step up to the plate' had the crowd moving. Meanwhile FOCUS (7.5) were impressing a packed gathering at the prog stage with the intro of 'Sylvia' sending a collective shiver up the spines of all before them. ORANGE GOBLIN (7.5) were instead kicking spines on the Metal Hammer stage with a forceful blast of underground stoner metal. 'Some you win, some you lose' threatens to whip the first ten lines of the crowd into frenzy before they finish the set with another favourite in the form of 'Scorpionica'. Back on the main stage THE ANSWER (7.5) prove how they have grown over the past few years, party thanks to a high profile tour with AC/DC. The voice of Cormac Neeson soars high into the sky before shooting down onto the crowd, capturing them with a mix of Irish charm and pure classic rock. The mix of influences and sounds that BIGELF (8) manage to cram into each song on the prog stage is a pleasure to behold, 'Money machine' ending an impressive set. Missing the first half of the set from GARY MOORE (7.5) was made worse after we learnt he had played 'Over the hills and far away' first, although a nice run through of 'Out in the fields' partly made up for it... partly... Some people find the misfiring vocals of Lee Dorrian a little hard to take but today CATHEDRAL (7.5) on the Metal Hammer stage are in surprisingly sprightly form, dishing out songs like 'Hopkins (the witchfinder general)' to a happy and bouncy crowd. Nothing so far had prepared the main stage crowd for the majestic offering from FOREIGNER (9) who somehow took their poppy 70s rock and exploded it all over the High Voltage site. Kelly Hansen puts in one of the most impressive vocal displays of the whole weekend on the likes of 'Head games' before the unmistakable keyboard intro to 'Cold as ice' captured even the uninitiated. The band lifted the bar even higher with the remarkable one-two knockout of 'Urgent', along with it's perfectly played saxophone solo and of course 'Juke box hero'. With Foreigner there is never any question who is the 'main main' and when the keyboards of Mick Jones are pushed to the front of the stage we are met with the inevitable encore of 'I want to know what love is', complete with children’s choir. Today Foreigner weren't just juke box heroes, they were the best band of the festival.

One of the highlights of the weekend was always going to be the Dio tribute set from HEAVEN AND HELL (8). For some it was a little weird. The voice of Masterplan singer Jorn Lande was at times a safe bet for a Dio covers band, handling the likes of 'The mob rules' and 'I' with ease, while the smoother tones of Glenn Hughes gave 'Children of the sea' room to breath, floating over a crowd witnessing Heaven and Hell for the very last time. With Wendy Dio coming on stage for a heart-felt speech and Phil Anselmo joining both singers on stage for the 'Neon knights' finale the tribute was complete.

The UK press has had its fare share of stories about Zakk Wylde being replaced by Gus G. in Ozzy's band so it was probably a relief to most that BLACK LABEL SOCIETY (7.5) have finally played live over here this year. All in all we got what was expected from the band with 'Fire it up' and 'Concrete jungle' in particular getting things moving.

Saturday main stage headliners ZZ TOP (8) play a summer evenings BBQ greatest hits set. 'Cheap sunglasses' cannot be listened to without the gentle shaking of the head and 'Just got paid' carries on this summertime boogie into the later part of the set. Billy Gibbons rasps through 'Gimme all your lovin' with a voice enriched by a lifetime of singing to packed stadiums followed by copious amount of Jack Daniels. The Texan three-piece bring Saturday to a close in style.

Sunday looks far more packed already as the gates open and the swarms of people head towards the various stages. The shaded area near the prog stage is already full when Welsh progressive metallers THE REASONING (8) take to the stage. The weaving riffs and male-female vocals are impressive and captivate the crowd for the whole of the thirty minute set. Opening the main stage the QUIREBOYS (7.5) offer something a little different with their pub-infused classic rock. 'Hey you' and '7 O'clock' seem to make the sun shine brighter as front man Spike throws the mike stand in the air for the hundredth time. The technical problems that threaten UFO (7.5) are fortunately confined to six-seven minutes allowing them to impress the crowd with the likes of 'Rock bottom' and one of the best songs of the weekend 'Doctor, doctor'. Phil Mogg jokes how he was born nearby and how this gig can be seen as a sort of homecoming.

Over on the Metal Hammer stage HIGH ON FIRE (7) seem to have plenty of heads banging but their set becomes a little samey after a while. CLUTCH (8.5) on the other hand breeze in and deliver one of the best sets of the weekend. There is never any fuss with Clutch. It's all about the music and a forceful play through of 'Power player' kicks things into gear. Jean-Paul Gaster seems to sit a mile away from his kit while dominating 'Cypress grove' and Neil Fallon is slightly more restrained than the usual mad preacher-isms of past performances. On the main stage JOE BONAMASSA (7.5) shows why he regarded so highly by his fans and fellow musicians while OPETH (8) on the Metal Hammer stage have the crowd in their grasp due to classics like 'The grand conjuration' and 'The drapery falls'. Phil Anselmo may have had a bad throat today but DOWN (8.5) are storming. 'N.O.D', 'Lifer' and 'Ghosts along the mississippi' are blistering, causing security their first major work out of the day retrieving flying bodies from the barriers at the front. Phil Anselmo is in a chirpy mood talking to the crowd at every opportunity. 'New orleans is a dying whore' showcases the Kirk Windstein influences, turning High Voltage into a four minute sludge-fest. 'Bury me in smoke' ends the set. If the next album meets the expectations of the fans we could see Down headlining bigger stages than this in the future.

The show was drawing to an end, but before people began spilling into the streets aside Victoria Park there was a small matter of EMERSON, LAKE AND PALMER (8) playing a fascinating ninety minute set. 'Karn evil 9 (pt2)' began proceedings, the light show penetrating the blackened sky making it impossible to ignore the spectacle in front of you. The lightning speed of Karl Palmer's arms when he is smacking the skins during 'Barbarian' is at times freakish while the synthesizer, piano and keyboard histrionics of Keith Emerson are the main sound byte throughout. Inevitably Keith Emerson also stabs knives into his equipment near the end of the performance.

As the last strains of ELP are heard over East London High Voltage 2011 is already being planned and it is safe to say most of the London rock community will be happy about that. See you next year.

HAIL OF BULLETS

Dutch Death Metal Masters HAIL OF BULLETS have finished the recordings for their long-anticipated second longplayer to be released October, 11 via Metal Blade Records in the UK.

Comments drummer Ed Warby: "I don't think I've ever worked this hard on anything in my entire life, but it sure has paid off! Although 'Of Frost And War' is a tough act to follow, my ringing ears tell me we've succeeded in besting it on every level: songs, playing, production… at the moment Dan Swanö is putting the final touches on a mix that could squash a tank, and then it's off to the pressing plant! All the main ingredients of our blood 'n' guts style death metal have remained intact and I honestly can't imagine anyone that liked our previous work is going to be the least bit disappointed, on the contrary!"

The yet untitled album was produced by Ed Warby and like before the monstrous mix was in the capable hands of Mr Dan Swano.

HAIL OF BULLETS nailed down 11 songs plus intro.

The limited edition of the CD will be released as a Digibook including a bonus-dvd. More details on this and the stunning new album will be posted soon!

'..OF FROST AND WAR' is out now on Metal Blade.
